Decent Tories

I can think of MP's from most parties who were/are utter twots and idiots. I can think of MP's from most parties who were/are decent people. But I cannot, in my 65 years on this planet, think of a Tory who does not put him/herself first, the Tory party second and anyone else last. So the answer to the OP is- no, I cannot think of a decent Tory.

Can you give me some MPs from other parties who have done that?

I can think of Robin Cook

Cooper boyo
I agree they might be decent human beings, no doubt about that.
The issue is about character. You look at Boris Johnson and scratch below the surface and it’s clear he has nothing.
So, many Tories I’d look at as decent but to stand behind someone like Johnson who is a lying toad basically so in my humble opinion mps lose all credibility backing someone who has no scruples what SO EVER.
Ps. Plenty of labour mps are utter tosh. Diane Abbott for one

Agree but the thread is about all tories and seemingly some want to paint their voters that way.

Unless you know an MP personslly i think its hard to say that person isnt decent (same goes for most i suppose)

As states earlier i had a long meeting eirh Sarah Newton when she was a minister and she was lovely. Really interested in my role etc too.

She resigned to vote down TM brexit deal snd stepped down as MP at last election

Just to add i also think the whip is an issue. I would prefer all MPs to be free to vote on every bill. There is a pack mentality with it, again from all parties. Would love MPs to be just vote however they liked

There are some decent Tories but you have to remember they have a different value system and think there is nothing wrong with individual gain and personal greed at the expense of fellow humans.

It‘s all about competition and survival of the fittest for them.

And it’s a bit of a strange cult where they are not bothered how bad a Tory government is as long as it’s a Tory government.

From someone who live in the Richmondshire Constituency William Hague was one of the least effective wettest waste of space MP I've ever seen. Sunak bought the seat....... they'd vote in roadkill round here if it had a blue rosette.

I can’t speak for him as an MP and I’d never vote for him or his party for a whole host of reasons, but when I’ve heard him speak on certain subjects in the years after his spell as leader I haven’t felt the need to clean myself in the shower, which is more than I can say for almost all of the recent lot!

You’re right they do think it’s survival of the fittest, yet they clearly don’t see the irony, because if it truly was survival of the fittest those pigeon toed narrow back b@st@rds wouldn’t last five minutes!

Dennis Skinner- Labour- would not use the Commons bar or restaurants as it was subsidised- his constituents did not get subsidised beer or food.
Stuart Bell -Labour -twot- don't think I need to say anymore
Alan Beith -Liberal- Lib/Dem- Thought more about his constituents problems and issues than the party-
Clegg- Lib Dem-Twot- Student fees says the lot- climbed into bed with the Tories in exchange for a bit of ( imagined) power-and was just as responsible for needless austerity as Cameron.
Arlene Foster- DUP- twot- held a Tory government to ransom in exchange for money to carry out her party policies.

Of course Coops- these are my own opinions

Thats what i meant. Good post

William Hague..A man of outstanding courage, conviction... and stalwart seeker of the truth.

"That inquiry concluded that ‘appalling’ sexual abuse went on for years in homes throughout the area. Jillings’s report was so devastating that Michael Beloff, a QC who specialises in libel, warned Clwyd Council not to publish it in case the council received some nasty libel writs. The council’s insurers also warned against publication. Indeed, they said that if the report was published and any of the abused young people sued the council, they would not stump up any damages. Thus pressurised, the councillors kept the report secret. The Secretary of State for Wales, Boy Wonder William Hague, also refused to publish it."

Surely it more likely that the good ones who are current MPs are keeping their heads down in the hope they don't get tarred as being part of Boris gang of B'stards.

Yep. Not to mention the fact that a whole raft of moderates were kicked out by Johnson and co for trying to ensure we couldn't end up with the current **** show of no deal we're now faced with.

There are no doubt still some decent Tory MPs but far fewer than their have been in recent years. The party has been shifted to the right. A lot of the new MPs are in because of their willingness to tow the Johnson line no matter what.

Ken Clarke was hated by the left when he was health secretary. He was the devil personified during the ambulance strike in 89.
As for Heseltine he presided over the final closing of the coal fields under the premiership of the now apparently decent John Major administering Thatchers final nail in the coffin.
But now because they are pro Europe they are decent are they? Maybe we should remember the likes of Benn(the man of the house not his pathetic son) and Shore, really decent political figures that would now be despised by the liberal left on here for their anti EU stance.
When I say decent I don't mean I agreed with their policies - far from it! But they seemed to at least have some decency, some sense of honour. Now they lie through their teeth, never resign when found out, are totally corrupt and don't really even try to hide that they don't give a damn.

Im with you 100% but make mine 70 years

Yes I think there are some misunderstandings here. I’m not a Tory voter and I’m unlikely ever to be, but there are the occasional ones who I don’t mind so much when I hear them talking on certain subjects, even if their records are often distasteful and it’s easy to find unpalatable episodes in their pasts. I imagine we can all find reasons to criticise every politician mentioned here without trying too hard, but I don’t think that was the intention of the thread.

Exactly this. The point of this thread was not to hint that there is anything about their policies or mindset I like - I will always be diametrically opposed to that party - but rather to pick out one or two shards of decency from the veritable sewage pipe that is Conservative Central Office, and there is the odd one. The thread was only meant to be light anyway, rather than another angry argument.
