'The sportsman decided to get them done while on holiday in France but regretted his decision when he met the late South African politician, admitting it would today be described as 'cultural appropriation'.'

Are we saying he's only saying that to tow party line? Was cultural appropriation seen as a big issue then as it is now? Blows my mind how hairstyles can be segregated to a specific culture. The world has actually gone mad.

Does that mean that if people move elsewhere and they dress like the people who live there then they’re racist?

I was at the Pulp gig at Finsbury park on Saturday. There was a long 'banned items' list but the clothing items were:
  • Clothing/garments/items which promote cultural appropriation
Nothing about promoting hate or anything like that

When does the appropriation start.. like from what year? When is it not allowed from?

Good question. No idea if it was policed. Didn't see anyone wearing a toga being removed.

I must be getting old. I find this a quite odd thing.

My first encounter with this was a music festivals. A few years ago there was a fashion (and I don't think it was anything more than that) to wear a feathered headdress like a Native American thing. There was an objection on the grounds of "cultural appropriation" and the practise very quickly died out. Since then it seems to be applied to other things like hairstyles.

Now, I fully understand that things like "blacking up" are a mockery of black people and doing the "chinese eyes" thing is obviously racist. I sort of see the objection when things are done in mockery of a practise but it seems to me that dressing up is more of a tribute than a mockery? As in "Apaches are cool".

I wouldn't do it (and never have) but it does seem odd to say that white people should not wear their hair in a certain style.

Apart from anything else I'd struggle to find enough follicles!

Just another in a long list of terms invented on Twitter and given far too much attention by the media.

I put “mansplaining” in the same category. Not to say that men should be allowed to patronise, but every gender patronises regularly and there really is no need for men to have their own special term for it.

Is the curly perm from the 70s as worn by harry Enfields scousers in the 90s cultural appropriation of the Afro
Yes, imagine a world without cultural appropriation.. just daft.

Almost as daft as racism.. when does that start.. what year..

'Blackfishing' is a new one as well. I thought it was to do with the Killer Whale documentary when I first heard in mentioned.

I'd be more interested in hearing what people of the cultures being aped make of it, after decades or even centuries of being mocked or persecuted over things, over what middle aged white footy fan make of it. Many might be ok with it, but many aren't.

The argument that it is harmless or even tributary often comes out but reality is it's often charicarured or stereotyped. How many Indian head dresses are culturally appropriate and not village people style for example?

We've only just gotten rid of things like golly and people still say nothing wrong with those.

A good example I can think of is the Washington Redskins

There was a huge backlash about it.

I love this video.really glad they did change their name.

Of course there will be culture war rage about it from the usual right wing media about how it's PC gawnnnn maddddd but corn rows, dreads, Bantu knots etc will have had people fired or persecuted previously so I can 100% understand people being ***ed off or becoming white fashion or used as fancy dress
