Daniel Sturridge pundit for Sky Sports

Keane knows exactly what he's doing - playing a character. He gets paid very handsomely to be a curmudgeon. Hence why he was dressed as a clown in the advert.

I enjoyed Sturridge yesterday as I'm glad Sky Sports have fully embraced that football is meant to be fun!

Not sure if this was mentioned yesterday, but apparently he is Sky's 'new signing' for this season. I'd be asking for a refund.

I feel sorry for Keane, he'll be out before Christmas.

Can’t wait for the road trip documentary where Micah and Sturridge just do daft stuff in a caravan for six episodes whilst Royston gradually loses the will to live….. In all seriousness I’m fine with this sort of thing, when it came down to it they did also talk sense about the game and it definitely wasn’t as bad as the Burnley Americanathon on Friday night - think Sturridge will settle into his role and be alright.

Yeah it could be put down to first day nerves, trying too hard to impress etc. I suppose.

Punditry is at it's best is when they start arguing with each other for me, like Keane and Carragher have done in the past... need to see more of that.

To my mind the worst Sky pundit these days is actually Jamie Carragher. It’s like he’s become drunk on the power that platform has given him, having started out as an insightful and engaging pundit. A big part of the issue with him is that he is never, ever, ever in a million years a co-commentator. He is absolutely terrible at this role. He’s behind Keane and Neville in the pecking order as well, which I think irks him as it was him and Neville for a couple of years not long back. Now Keane is the star turn.

Just thinking about it, it’s the hyperbole from both Carragher and Neville. Neville always said he would stay away from that but it’s definitely crept in over the past year or so. They just appear very desperate to show us how serious and informed they are about everything but… to me it’s just become two blokes bickering about Liverpool and Man.United, which is boring as f*ck. Probably even if you support one of those teams.

I only switch sky sports on when the live match kicks off. It goes on mute at halftime when I'm usually doing the washing up, and the moment the final whistle goes, its switched off. I haven't watched any pre-match or after match punditry for the last few seasons tbh. If there was also an option to watch the match without commentators yapping away and just have crowd sounds instead, I'd gladly pay Sky an extra fiver a month. Guess I'm a miserable old t@at these days ;)

That "We know you’re trying to attract new younger audiences" line feels so tired and cliche. Sky don't really need to do anything to attract "new younger audiences", at least not with football, the hook is the football, if you're someone who likes football that's your in, not how cool and trendy the punditry is or isn't. I doubt anyone at Sky has got Sturridge in for him to start singing or whatever every week.

They kept repeating a highlight package on Sky Sports News dedicated purely to Sturridge's 'best bits' from the two games yesterday. It's being heavily pushed throughout social media.

They repeat talked about moments from their coverage across social media and stuff every week and have done for years, whether it's pundits arguing or just something funny or whatever.

Already got Micah Richards being a bit of a clown. Don't need another one.

Maybe I'm a bit old school with my punditry but I would rather pundits analyse a game and highlight teams failing. Criticise teams when they should be criticised. Not clowns on there having a laugh and a joke.

I want to see professional opinions. I want to see pundits challenge managers and challenge each other.

I can see why the like of Keane and Souness might be disliked particularly by the younger generation and maybe their outlook on the game is a bit dated but I don't see younger ex-players having the same passion that they do and quite frankly don't have the same intelligence and knowledge of the game.

I actually enjoyed watching the EPL this weekend. Didn't watch much last year but think I'll be more into it this.

That said, the whole commentary and presentation absolutely does my head in. I understand that my desire for interesting, thoughtful analysis probably means I'm NOT their target audience but it feels like the coverage is trying to compete with the actual sport (never a good thing imo).

I can just about listen to Neville who at least attempts to offer some genuine insight but otherwise I feel like putting my foot through the TV. Rest of the season will be watched on mute I think.

They aren't trying to attract people to watch the football. People are already doing that and they've got them with the subscription. They are trying to get people to watch the full programme, before and after the football, because that includes all the adverts. Younger generations are more likely to just watch the football and then turn over.

Sturridge yesterday was very annoying.

Skysports need to be careful because it's starting to look like a circus.

Micah brings a lot of 'fun' to punditry and I actually like how Micah talks/acts etc as it's refreshing, but the way Sturridge was acting/talking/behaving yesterday was well OTT....hugging and cuddling Keane (when he looked like he didn't appreciate it).

They needed to rid themselves of Souness as he was a dinosaur when it came to talking about football, but I don't think Sturridge is the answer.

I like Neville, Richards, Keane.....Carragher I don't mind from a pundit POV (but ever since the spitting incident I don't think I'll ever warm to the scumbag).

I am looking forward to MNF tonight as I actually enjoy that. The buildup and the talking after the match is very enjoyable.

This

I manage to watch live matches without the "benefit" of someone telling me what I'm seeing. I too would happily pay more to just watch the match. I'm surprised that Amazon who have tried some really interesting additions (like being able to watch a highlight at any point during the game, say if you've missed a goal or a send off) haven't offered a "crowd only" option.
