Dael Fry under Woodgate

Whether they performed well for us here or not is irrelevant, they are all managers that have managed at the top level.
A bit like Ayling then
And, I dont recall Woodgate operating as a manager at the too level

Bang on. It's absolutely not the personnel. It's the system. It always has been.
Its hard work tip tapping around the pitch for 90 minutes, and even harder that you cant even consider launching it if in danger or making them turn for a breather.
We haven't the speed in our defenders to go man for man, so zonal it is, and the concentration level has to be high not only to defend, but when you do intercept it in defence the midfield or forwards have to be on their metal to receive it so you can make a forward pass. If we aren't sharp we give it to midfield and they keep turning the ball over. Its not the easiest game playing for Middlesbrough.

They've all managed in the top flight. I'm not sure what more you expect?
I was just curious about your point
Mine is - by the time they came to us they were on the decline and ended up making a mess of their time here.
Picking Fry IMO says nothing about his ability which I think is ‘decent championship standard’ who wouldn’t get a game for the teams around us.

To still be reliant on him shows a lack progress

I think whatever league we are in next season the defence needs seriously looking at.

Fry in my opinion isn’t reliable enough to be a starter for a team with promotion ambitions.

We need a new right back, likely another LB (to add to our collection) and 2 new CBs. Sadly I think Lenihan will likely retire too.

We will probably sign 5 wingers instead.

Your first sentence shows you know exactly what league will be in. I agree 100%

As managers that have managed at the top level, they’ve seen what it takes and as I said, every manager that he’s played under has selected him. None have tried to replace him. I’ll take their collective judgement as indicative of his ability.

But then got dumped the season after in preference for Lenihan. Wilder criticised him and other players for lacking ambition and being comfortable just being a championship player.

Aye he should have been flashing his drawers at every bottom feeding premier league team like that old tart wilder.

before being brought back into the side after he realised he’d made the wrong decision..

…and for the record Fry didn’t replace Lenihan in the team, he’d already been brought back in the starting XI. Lenihan only missed four games.

I'm not sure what your argument is. I disagree that Wilder brought Fry in because he realised he made the wrong decision. He brought him back in due to injury to Lenihan. Why would Wilder not play Fry, a recognised CB, if we had injury at CBs. We played 3 and we had 4 + 2 full backs (Dijksteel and Bola) filling in. Lenihan had been playing the central role. Fry was the obvious reserve choice for that particular position in the back 3.

For the record:
West Brom (H) - Dijksteel, Lenihan and Bola CBs, Fry on bench
QPR (A) - Dijksteel, Lenihan and Bola CBs, Fry on bench
Sheff Utd (H) - Fry, Lenihan, McNair. Fry taken off at half time.
Stoke (A) - Dijksteel, Lenihan and Bola CBs, Fry on bench
Reading (A) - Fry, Lenihan, Bola. Fry taken off at half time
Swansea (H) - McNair, Lenihan, Clarke, Fry on the bench
Watford (A) - McNair, Lenihan, Clarke. Fry on bench, replaces Lenihan who goes off injured with ankle injury.
Sunderland (H) - McNair, Fry, Clarke. Lenihan absent through injury.
Cardiff (H) - McNair, Fry, Clarke. Lenihan absent through injury.
Rotherham (H) - Dijksteel, Fry, Clarke. Lenihan absent through injury.
Coventry (A) - Dijksteel, Fry, Clarke. Lenihan absent through injury.
Wilder sacked

In summary, Wilder decided Fry was not good enough for the first XI coming into the season and didn't play him. Fry replaced Lenihan in the team when he missed 4 games through injury.

So you’re choosing to ignore all the games Fry started before, during and after Lenihan’s injury for Wilder? I’m not sure how you think you’ve demonstrated that Wilder didn’t think Fry was good enough. Particularly when he played almost every minute for Wilder in the season before when fit.

Fry played two games that season before Lenihan's injury and got taken off at half time in both. Lenihan didn't return to fitness until after Wilder was sacked.

As I said in my first post, Wilder criticised Fry and others in the squad in the final part of the 21-22 season before for lacking ambition and being happy/comfortable just being championship players. Therefore he set about replacing some of these players in the closed season, Fry being one of them with Lenihan.

I think I have demonstrated that Wilder didn't think Fry was good enough because he signed a new centre back (Lenihan) and put him in the team instead of Fry. The fact is that is that in Wilder's games that season Fry played only twice alongside Lenihan totalling 90 minutes in total. I would speculate as well that if Lenihan had not got injured he would have continued with McNair, Lenihan and Clarke as the three throughout September and at Coventry City.

Jones played most of last season for Carrick but then when Doak signed he hardly got a look in this term. That's what happens. Managers look to upgrade players for whatever reason, even if they have played them a lot previously. Did Carrick rate Jones? Well yes at the time he was the best he had on the right, but then he got someone better. The same happened under Wilder where Lenihan replaced Fry.
