Coronavirus good news thread

Antiviral Nasal spray with impressive results -

They were talking about a nasal spray months ago which was being developed in Birmingham. Wonder what happened to that one. I was using First Defence spray last year, Not really scientifically based but I figured it would work on any cold-like virus which gets in via the nose.

I’m a big fan of that First Defense. My mother in law is a GP and she used to chuckle at me using it at the first sign of a cold. Thought it was a bit of a con. One day she tried it herself and is now convinced it works pretty well.
There is another similar product called nasaleze, which is a powder you hung up your nose and it creates a barrier over the mucous membranes (or something along those lines).
I started using that at one point, when going into work during times of high prevalence.

I swear by Sudafed nasal spray whenever I have a cold.

Asthma inhaler found to speed recovery from covid.
(It may even reduced hospitalisations and death, although this wasn’t proven in this particular study)

‘Interpretation

Inhaled budesonide improves time to recovery, with a chance of also reducing hospital admissions or deaths (although our results did not meet the superiority threshold), in people with COVID-19 in the community who are at higher risk of complications.’

Interim results show cheap antidepressant looking promising as a treatment.

(Interestingly, the trial was also looking at ivermectin, and showed no significant effect for that drug.)

‘An inexpensive anti-depressant curbed the number of COVID-19 patients ending up in hospital by 30 per cent, making it a potential breakthrough treatment for a virus that continues to spread widely, a Canadian-led clinical trial is reporting.’

Game changer - oral antiviral pill trial positive results -

‘reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by 50% in an interim analysis of a late-stage trial, findings that could give doctors another potent virus-fighting tool.’

Only successful in animal trials so far, but in what might eventually prove to be the best bit of coronavirus good news we've had yet:

Japanese scientists develop radical new vaccine that could prevent future coronavirus pandemics
Thanks for that. That does seem to be the direction of travel required to neutralise this type of virus for good. The article highlights, however, the “ground zero” of these pandemics is linked to our consumption of meat and intensive farming. The human race needs to radically change to stay alive

Needle-free Covid vaccines may be available soon, which are actually more effective at inducing immunity than those delivered by syringe, as well as requiring lower doses and being easier to store, distribute and administer.

Needle-free vaccine patches coming soon, say researchers and makers

The immune systems of those who got the patch produced high levels of neutralizing antibodies after two doses, including in their lungs, vital to stopping COVID, and the patches outperformed syringes.

This is looking very good -

‘Pfizer said its Covid-19 pill reduced hospitalizations and deaths in high-risk patients by 89%, a result that has the potential to upend how the disease caused by the coronavirus is treated and alter the course of the pandemic.’

‘just 0.8% of people who started treatment within three days of getting sick ended up in the hospital and no one died, while 7% of people who got a placebo in that window were later hospitalized or died.’

This is excellent news. We've proven through various lockdowns and measures that slowing down the spread of the virus isn't enough. If we can simply lessen it's impact then we just don't need to worry about the spread, any more so than we worry about the spread of the common cold.

Yep, these oral drugs that are arriving now are going to be a real game changer, and I’m sure they’ll be improved upon with the passage of time.

I'd love them to come up with a test that doesn't involve sticking a rod up your nose, I can live with it but doing those tests on children is awful.
