As BM points out, we're not face to face with racists here. However if you really want to fix the issue you have to find a way to get through to these people. Just calling them idiots and racists to their face isn't going to work. That's an attack, so they'll become defensive, they won't listen.
To really tackle racism and, importantly, get through to people, you need to really understand where they're coming from. Why they have the beliefs they do, why they do the things they do. Only then can you start to educate them and take apart their arguments and beliefs piece by piece.
I don't accept that anyone on this board is consciously racist. We can all be guilty of inadvertent racism/homophobia/transphobia/etc. from time to time and pointing it out however bluntly is hopefully, if not educational at least a lesson in etiquette.
People mistakenly compare this and other forms of social media to be like being down the pub. It isn't, we're behind a screen of anonymity and some misuse that but also it means that whereas in a pub if I heard someone being racist or homophobic or whatever I might just roll my eyes, tut and move on, on here I would challenge and call out. Bullies (and most racists are bullies) will cry about "freedom of speech" etc. So, there is little point in trying to engage a racist to try to get to the bottom of their prejudice. They KNOW it's wrong. If in today's world you still choose to hold those beliefs then by and large you must know that those beliefs are not acceptable so you will only expound them when anonymity allows you to do so. They've had the education and ignored it, they know it's wrong but they are filled with fear and hate. I pity them but I won't pander to them.
