Christmas Cancelled

The Johnson play book hitherto has been to lag about 3-4 days behind whatever action Scotland takes.

I can envisage an announcement on 22nd Dec to say something like

'oh jolly sorry but this retched virus is out of control again so we are urging the heroic people of our great land to stay at home, protect the NHS and your loved ones and let's all meet up in the sunlit uplands when covid is firmly on the run from our vaccine'
You missed out any reference to putting the boot on it's throat.

I've read on this page 'celebrations' and 'revelry', well some of us just want to have a quiet Xmas lunch with family, some members we haven't seen since the turn of this horrible year.
I totally understand that. Do you understand why we have the current restrictions? If you do, maybe you can workout why suspending then for five days is unwise

Where I live, weve been in lock down and on high alert for almost 8 out of the last 9 months - and anything which means I can safely get out of the City, travel on a train, go to a cafe and get out of four walls is welcome.

My wife, daughter and I are isolating before my father-in-law comes over for christmas, as is he. We are foregoing seeing any other family at all, our 4 other kids our brothers and sisters and my dad.

We present very little risk and haven't been out for days now.

My daughter who is 9 is a problem as she will be inschool until Friday so will only isolate for 6 days but it is the best we could manage.

We are not, as some are suggesting, organising a big booze up, though my wife has made vodka moonshine which is awful, but she likes it.

We have about a gallon if anyone is interested?

Can I put it in my petrol tank?

It is what it is - I much prefer people use common sense (as you are and many others) if that were the case for everyone we wouldn’t need a set of rules that cannot possibly cover every scenario. The problem is that there are too many people who will ignore them and risk themselves and others. The rules should be used as a guideline and common sense should be the defining factor - not what you can get away with “oh the pubs close tonight so let’s all flock there in our hundreds”

The problem is people definition of common sense differs. There are people on this thread who think ignoring the rise in cases and the current restrictions to have family over at Christmas is common sense. I disagree. I don’t see how suspending rules designed to save lives and stop the spread of a virus over some days just because it’s a religious festival and possibly be common sense

On the last day of xmas my true love gave to me............
A policy to kill more people

(If lockdown is a strategy to prevent further deaths)

Very odd

Yes I’ve seen your views and I believe you and I are aligned on this one. I for one probably won’t leave the house on Christmas Day - it might seem a bit sad and lonely but I believe it’s for the greater good!

Agreed I’m going to be stuck in the house too,
First Christmas in 42 years I won’t be travelling to the north east. It’s sad but bigger picture it should be worth it

You really are a condescending sod.

Who has said they are going to totally ignore and disregard the guidelines. People have stated they will have family but will be limiting it/self isolating beforehand etc

This is one of the issues of the pandemic, people like you always wanted to be elitist, now have the perfect opportunity to cyril sneer at the lower classes when sat in their middle class house in their middle class part of Britain.

'Those riff raff are all having xmas parties and will be drinking their Carling and eating their Bernard Matthews turkey roast....peasants'

I bet your partner wishes you would invite someone round.

Personal insults. Nice. Shame you had to be like that.

What have I said that you’re upset about? I absolutely do think that opening up restrictions over Christmas is not a sensible thing to do. I will argue against it. You seem upset because me not wanting to spread the virus conflicts with your need to be together for Christmas. Fatcat and myself are making the sacrifice this year, as are many others. What makes you so special that you HAVE to meat up with family at this particular time. That you wilfully ignore the virus?

The PM has said the Christmas relaxation will continue . . . . . to stop the criminalisation of those who have already made plans. Sounds a good scientific decision.

Some people really don't have the faintest clue of the impact being entirely alone is having on people. Blitheringly ignorant.
I do. As it happens. I also understand the impact the virus is having. My Problem is that, even people who are struggling with isolation but sticking to the rules, are happy to break them for a randomly assigned date. It’s just illogical. Why go through all that isolation, and then risk extending isolation periods in the new year, because your calendar has a particular date on it? It defies all logic

You're off again.

'Look at me I'm sacrificing myself for Xmas.'

I don't have to meet up with anyone at Xmas and you don't know exactly what my plans are so don't put me into the Carling & Turkey Roast category that you seem to have put everyone else in just because they're not making a point of everyone knowing that they're not mixing with anyone this Xmas.

Yet you’re happy to insult me and argue FOR breaking the restrictions at Christmas ? Why? Because you just want an argument with me? Or you don’t understand the virus?

You seem to be suggesting it’s the lower classes who will be breaking the rules - I don’t think anybody has said that - from what I’ve seen it’s not necessarily a class thing - people from all walks of life breaking the rules.
Seems a bit harsh on ST attacking him like that after twisting his words, he never said half the things you have accused him of.
