Chris Wilder Management

I am more an observer of the forum than a regular contributor. Like all Boro fans I was very optimistic about this season but because we have been so poor felt the need to make a point and see what some of the regular posters think.
Leadership and management are separate disciplines but with a significant amount of overlap between the two. We know from his previous management success Chris Wilder has the proven ability to do both but when it comes to the Boro he seems to have lost the plot.
After a shaky start to the season Barnsley at home was the ideal opportunity to get a positive kick forward with a decent result under our belt following the defeat at QPR but we sent out a weakened side and got what we deserved, nowt.
Instead of sending out our strongest possible team from the start he appears to be micro managing the minutiae of the opposition and if anyone needed proof of that they only needed to see our starting eleven yesterday.
It was so negative, he was basically saying we've got a point, let's just try and keep that, that's not a winning mentality, as a leader what sort of message does that send to the players.
Currently the buck stops with CW, lot's of rumours and rumblings of discontent in the background, the fans need some real evidence
of positive management and leadership for Birmingham, come guys sort it out. UTB

I`ve followed every Chris Wilder media conference since he arrived and provided a regular transcript for the Match-day threads.
Chris is a man used to winning.
He said on Friday - "every club I`ve joined has been in trouble..." and hes taken every one to the next level.
He has apologised for his mistakes and shows humility.
Contrary to the urban myths - he does give a monkeys and he does change the "system" and tactics, and he doesnt favour any individual players.
He also doesnt hold grudges or make emotion-loaded selections - which is another urban myth.
This Burnley nonsense is just that. As he said on Friday "I put that to bed.."
"Teesside Urban Legends" has become "Teesside Urban Myths"(n)

Beyond Our Wilderest Dreams

Wilder Point.jpg

Since starting his career at Southampton as a youth, Chris Wilder played 448 games in a career spanning almost 20 years.
His Managerial career began at non-league Alfreton, where he managed them for 27 weeks, winning them 4 trophies in the process!
What followed was 6 years at Halifax, 8 years at Oxford, 2 years at Northampton and 3 years at Sheffield United. An outstanding record Managing hundreds of players amounting to 978 games! [so far].

As Chris pointed out in his Friday Media Conference - he is no quitter, no novice and no fool. He pointed out that every club he has Managed has been "in trouble" - and hes taken every club to the next level and beyond. The reason for mentioning these stats is to reassure fans and others that we have a Manager who knows his onions. He is aware of the disappointing start of the season and the need for him, and his Management Team, to reflect and take action to rectify the situation quickly. I have documented dozens of times, Chris has never been backwards in coming forwards in taking responsibility and apologising when its been appropriate. He`s shown humility at times, but is also blunt and straight-forward with anyone when its needed, whether journalists, players, commentators, TV, Radio or anyone else. What you see is what you get.

Chris Wilder.....

"The top and bottom of it is I was employed to win games of football and, at the moment, I`m not enjoying it, because my team and my football club are not winning games of football".

Pressure (?)

"I enjoy the pressure"..its what its all about. The here and now is a "test of the players, of coaching staff and Manager and of the football club".
This league is wide open. "Its not like the Premier League....with 4 leagues in one..." where there are guaranteed winners at the top and the rest.
This is.."not a time for anybody to walk away". "We have to dig in, grind out results and make people feel better".

As for rumours, gossip and speculation on social media and elsewhere, Chris laughed at some of the suggestions, but said he didn`t have social media accounts - unlike some other Managers - preferring to focus on the serious job of managing players and getting the team to the next level. "Everybody has to deal with noise and nonsense..". "I can understand a little loss of faith and trust"[from the fans], but "I`ll never try to spin opinion with the fans..". "I`m still contracted for a further 18 months". He`s not going anywhere - there was a steely look in his eye and an expression which said "don`t ask me that again". Move on!

"Is [your] future away from Middlesbrough with Bournemouth"?

A resounding "NO"! was his response. He was unequivocal. No one was left with any doubt:

" 100% NOT. Its nonsense what`s happened. I dealt with that speculation a month ago and put it to bed. Its come from nowhere, where its not needed by anybody, I`ve just laughed it off really". "I think that`s what happens when teams don`t get results that maybe they expected.....its part of the industry you have to deal with". He was disparaging of journalists and others, claiming that untruths and speculation was "...disrespectful to players, the Manager and the football club". "(I)...concentrate on what (I) control". I still have the "hunger" - 100%". My drive to take MFC to the higher level (?) "Its huge". Chris Wilder says convincingly, that he loves football as an apprentice, a player, a coach and a Manager". The "fire" is still in his belly.

Coventry?

There has been a lot of work on the training pitch for goal-keeping coaches, focusing on fitness and strength. He described Mowatt, Clark and Rodrego as "under-cooked" - from that I gathered he meant they werent up to the standard he expects of players to be chosen for the first team. Certainly, we should expect more of seasoned pro`s like Mowatt and Clarke, but Rodrego arrived not long before the break and needs to sharpen up fast.

Darnell Fisher?

He was delighted that Darnell, who has spent "15 months away from the lights" and has toughed it out to get back on the grass.
"I must give an enormous amount of credit to the boy"
Asked would he be back in full training and considered for a return to the first team soon (?) chris indicated that it would maybe around Christmas time - but he couldnt say for certain - that was up to the Doctor and coaches.

Hi r00fie1, thanks for the response, as I said you cannot dispute his record and I like most thought we had really cracked it when he came to the Boro ...so do we give him more time, will he get more time, we need a result, pressure, pressure, pressure. Still can't figure his selection on Saturday ...no one saw that coming.

He might be able to deal with pressure but I don't think the players can. Jones has the mental strength of a two year old...he certainly doesn't seem to have much of a football brain...you can tell that by his decision making.

This is rubbish no manager is used to winning we might hope it but he wasn’t Alex Ferguson.

I think he over estimates his past record as well.
No.
If you want to check his record - feel free:

Managerial career

Alfreton Town

Wilder began his career in management at Alfreton Town. He took over at the club in late October 2001 and in the 27 weeks he was in charge won four trophies: the Northern Counties (East) League Premier Division, the League Cup, the President's Cup and the Derbyshire Senior Cup.

Halifax Town

Wilder returned to Halifax Town as manager on 2 July 2002.[8][9] He replaced caretaker manager Neil Redfearn, who had in turn replaced Alan Little (who left on 8 April after falling ill with appendicitis in March). Halifax had been relegated to the Conference at the end of the season.

Wilder was in charge at Halifax for more than 300 games until the club went into liquidation on 30 June 2008, and he decided to join former Halifax defender Alan Knill, as the assistant manager of Bury.[10]

Oxford United

After fewer than six months at Gigg Lane, Wilder was appointed as the manager of Conference National club Oxford United on 21 December 2008[11] (replacing Jim Smith who had been caretaker manager in the wake of Darren Patterson's sacking), where he only just missed out on a play-off place in his first season. Wilder's first full season in charge of Oxford began successfully and by mid-season they were top of the Conference table by five points with a game in hand. However, Oxford were overtaken by Stevenage, who would go on to win the title and take the automatic promotion place, consigning the Us to the playoffs with Luton Town, Rushden & Diamonds and York City. They defeated Rushden & Diamonds to reach the play-off final, and gained promotion to the Football League by beating York City 3–1.[12]

In their first season back in the Football League in four years, Wilder guided Oxford to mid-table safety. The team finished 12th, in the top half of the table, their highest finish in seven years.[13] The next season Oxford finished ninth, after poor form late in the season led to the team dropping out of the play-off position they had occupied for most of the year.[14] Oxford's chairman Kelvin Thomas gave Wilder his backing, meaning he would remain manager for the 2012–13 season.[15] Despite failing to achieve a play-off place again in Oxford's third season back in the League, and intense speculation about his future at the club, Wilder was offered and accepted a further one-year contract for the 2013–14 season.[16]

On 26 January 2014 he resigned as Oxford manager with the intention of joining League Two rivals Northampton Town as their manager.[17]

Northampton Town

On 27 January 2014, Wilder was appointed manager of Northampton Town, signing a three-and-a-half year contract. Wilder successfully battled against relegation to the Conference, after taking over the club in the relegation zone in League 2.[18] He led the side to a mid-table finish in the 2014–15 season, and then to the League Two title the following season with 99 points,[19] despite significant financial difficulties at the club resulting in players and staff not being paid during October and November 2015.[20]

Sheffield United

On 12 May 2016, Wilder joined his boyhood club Sheffield United as their new manager on a three-year contract, following the parting of company with Nigel Adkins.[21][22] In the pre-season, despite little financial backing, he was able to bring some new players in, many of which were free transfers. He then made Sheffield born Billy Sharp club captain. However, Wilder's League One managerial debut got off to a poor start, only gaining a single point from the first four games, which left Sheffield United at the bottom of League One.[23] Despite this, the club pushed on and went on to become League One Champions, securing 100 points in the process, a club record.[24]

His second season was full of highs and few lows. His managerial Championship debut against Brentford ended in a 1–0 win for Sheffield United.[25] Then in September 2017, United beat city rivals Sheffield Wednesday 4–2 at Hillsborough,[26] a record for goals scored by United against Wednesday at Hillsborough. By the end of October, after beating local rivals Leeds United 2–1 at Elland Road, Sheffield United were top of the Championship.[27]
1664732408198.png
On 28 April 2019, it was confirmed that Wilder had led the Blades to the Premier League following nearest rival Leeds' 1–1 draw at home.[28] This ensured his second promotion in just three years at the club. This achievement earned him the LMA Manager of the Year award.[29]

In July 2019, Wilder signed a new three-year contract with the club.[30] On 10 January 2020, Wilder signed a four-year contract extension with the club.[31] Sheffield United went on to finish ninth in their first season back in the top flight, their best since 1991–92.

On 13 March 2021, Wilder left the club by mutual consent, with the club bottom of the Premier League, with 14 points from 28 games.[32]

Middlesbrough

On 7 November 2021, Wilder was appointed manager of Middlesbrough after the club parted ways with Neil Warnock.[33] After an unbeaten month which saw Boro win four out of their five matches, Wilder was awarded the EFL Championship Manager of the Month award for December 2021 with his wing-back Isaiah Jones winning the Player of the Month award.[34]

I’d agree with him not lasting the month out - i do feel some sympathy for him though having clearly not got all the players in he wanted, along with losing arguably our best player in Tav. I think Gibson will act soon, in fact the decision may already have been made regardless of what happens on Wednesday. We’re quarter of the way into the season and performances are declining rather than improving. It’s not what anyone was really expecting and the club certainly can’t afford to go down

Can we add
Boro’s worst ever start to a season to his record?

We have a short memory ref the Burnley nonsense. He had opportunities to put it bed long before he did.
He kept it running - poor in the extreme.

Id people think he is getting the best out of this squad then no problem.

I don’t know one Boro fan who thinks that so - we have a leadership problem at the moment.

I don’t like how he seems to be distancing himself from this crisis with all this well im Not used to losing.

Well you are the manager Chris this is on you and it’s you team your players that are losing.

I really thought that Mr Wilder was going be the man to take Boro up but we are gradually getting worse and I would now settle for another season in this league.
To play people like Clarke in recent games while Fry and Paddy are relegated to the bench was just one of many inexplicable decisions.
Perhaps a change of management before Boro get too entrenched in a relegation battle may be the answer because I would rather start next season in the Championship than the third tier.

I really thought that Mr Wilder was going be the man to take Boro up but we are gradually getting worse
I felt the same ( as my hoofed posts today have shown) But I agree it’s not working is it. His team selections esp subs are baffling.

Something or some one needs to change.

It's not the system, it can't be the system because that is Wilder's system. Giles and Jones are "really, unbelievably forward-thinking players" Well play them as wingers and play full backs who only have to defend.

Let’s say he had gotten Callum O’Hare & Daryl Dike early doors in the window.. we’d have still had to get on with it regardless.

He needs to find a way to WIN not have good stats. Points need to go on the board, what he had done has worked in the past and now it isn’t working. We look absolutely all over the place!!
