Charlie Hebdo - Front cover

Absolute bull. This is the propaganda we've been fed for years and is a lie.
spot on Corcaigh. The French have a history and pride and personality. As do the americans, and chinese. His nonsense is the worst kind of patriotism, snearing at other countries because they're not us. His xenophobia is plane to see.

When I think of patriotism, I don't think of this nonsense snearing at others, or thinking that 'pomp and ceremony' in deference to a rich, influential thieving and corrupt family is what makes the country 'great'.

I think about the great thinkers that have enriched human knowledge, Isaac Newton to Steven Hawking, I think about our writers Shakespeare and Dickens to Tolkien and Orwell, about our musicians from Percell to Thom Yorke, our artists from Turner and Constable to Hockney and Banksy. Our inventors from Fereday to Tim Berners-Lee. Not once do I think about the Queen cutting ribbons for 70mill quid cash and another 300mill+ in benefits. Seriously the queen and all her clingers on are not fit to wipe the asses of those giants of British history and culture.

they are racist tho arent they?forgetting about the current shenannigans,go back as far as india, they are a despicable bunch,as which there is no denying!!!!!!
I think you might find that the majority of the UK were racist in the age you refer to. Racism then was not exclusively for royalty. Probably makes most of the UK a despicable bunch by that measure.

This is what I was trying to say, people are trying to isolate the royals as racists by history but they don’t realise standards were different and society as a whole behaved differently, look at TV characters like Alf Garnett and that was relatively recently, we live in a different place now, things have moved on.

that may be true, but it's certainly a truism that the royals and elite profiteered from racism and the average citizen didn't. In fact those citizens had a lot in common with the subjugated, manipulated, and abused non-whites. Some applies today of course, and many people still haven't learned this lesson, that non-elites should be working together against the corrupt elites not against each other.

Do you think that any, or many people are really bothered? I've been a Republican for my entire life but I now know that the monarchy is ingrained and it's not going to change in the next decades. Maybe if a future king or queen goes totally off the rails and - at the same time - there's an obvious alternative. As we are in 2021 the monarchy is perceived as a foil to a group of politicians who don't see the big picture and couldn't see the way ahead if it was illuminated with landing lights.

I think that more people should be bothered, and stats show that more people are becoming bothered particularly in younger groups. The route out of this corrupt institution is by ingraining in today's youth to question it rather than just accept it. Most people over 40 that are monarchists are lost and will never reject it regardless what what they say or do, it's a bit like a cult in that way.

According to Sky News.....

Prince Harry and Meghan's popularity has fallen to its lowest level after their interview with Oprah Winfrey, according to a poll.

Their claim that questions had been raised about the colour of their son Archie's skin made headlines around the world.

Meghan also said she'd had suicidal feelings due to the pressure of life in the spotlight

But a survey suggests their tell-all interview has not gone down well with some people in the UK.

In contrast, support for the Queen and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge appears to be unchanged and very positive, according to the poll.

It's not the same as a cult. If you are born British then you are born into a monarchical system. You don't join it, you are in it anyway.

It will take much, much more than a disaffected spare heir to the throne and his attention craving wife to sow the seeds of a Republic. What's past is past, the way to a Republic is about the future and how to exploit it, not about whether the monarchy benefitted from an empire 150 years ago.

For starters it's undemocratic, I thought we were all for elected leaders these days.
Maybe do a strictly royal family each year, give other people a chance to be king and queen instead of the same old tired looking lot.
As for the tourists does no one visit the Royal palaces in France anymore?
Getting rid didn't spoil the French tourist industry

Is that any different to say christianity another cult?

The tides been turning for the last 30 years. Accelerating prior to this latest crap show. Prior to Andrews behaviour and creepy cringy interview. Every little embaressing behaviour like this needs calling out.

Just out of curiosity, in real terms as a tax payer how much does the Royal Family cost me a week?
Well that depends on your income, like all taxes. The estimated cost to the nation is a minimum of 350mill. Now how much it costs as an individual is the favourite game for the monarchy to play. Because if it's several pounds each it sounds like a worthless discussion. The fact is for 350mill we could pay every nurse in this country over £1,200 extra or we could spend that money on one entitled elitist family to keep their gravy train rolling. Which do you think we should do?

You should put that on a bus. Remember Remember last people who said "we spend £350 mil on this institution " ?

The character of 'alf garnett' is a creation to show how stupid and ignorant racism is.

he was not designed to promote or give an enlightened view on racism, rather, to satire it as abhorrent .

racists didnt get this (why would they) and made him a cult figure of hero status - the very fact that the part was acted by Warren Mitchell a labour voter and son of a Russian Jew went right over their heads, and still does today.

spot on Wilf, I can't believe that holgate_roof just put Alf Garnett forward in that way....scratch that, I can believe it.

The royals as individuals may have some racist people and may have some who are not (for the record I don't believe the queen to be racist), but as an institution it is certainly bigoted that certain people are better than others, at birth, depending on socio-economic factors, and perceived better dna, that in itself leans to an inherent bias against people of colour. Probably largely racist by proxy, rather than direct, but hey, it's still not a good look.
