As Channel 4 reaches its 40th birthday, The Guardian have chosen their 40 best shows.

Some real cultural moments in there, but what are your memories of Channel 4 ?

Think mine would be mostly musical (L7, Saint Etienne or Nirvana on The Word), Mark Radcliffe's White Room, Caitlin Moran's Naked City or comedy related The Inbetweeners, Brass Eye, The 11 o'clock Show, Seans Show, Big Night Out etc

Sean's show - forgot about that. Absolute masterpiece.
Trigger happy tv, Adam and Joe show. Bight night out. Garth Merenghi. Some of the channel 4 comedy has been great.

Seem a bit obsessed with boobs and willies currently which is a shame. At least Dave is a channel now.

Everytime I'm eating I'll flick through the channels and without fail naked attraction will be on. There's about 50 channel 4 channels on Freeview and it's a cast iron guarantee that just as I'm biting into a sausage roll I'll flick over and there will be a close up of someone's manky ****. I despise that programme I really do.

In fact the other week I turned my telly on and immediately there was a close up of a penis on screen. I switched channels and Nigel farage was on. I thought well that's F***ing that and read a book instead.

Yeah me and the kids had been watching Andor the other night. Switched back to 'normal' tv to be shown someone massaging their 'my massive ****'. Just need to avoid the channel at all costs these days.

The Word, The Tube, TFI, Seans Show, was GAS Channel 4???, Black Books, Brass Eye, Teachers, Shameless, Phoenix Nights etc etc

I can't list everyone one of my favourite shows as there are far too many to remember.

Brookside. The greatest soap of all time.

I’ll never forget this, and I wonder if anyone else remembers Mark Page (urgh) on the mic at half-time of Steve Pears testimonial (last ever match at Ayresome).

“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s life for Mandy Jordache and five years for Beth.”

Shows you what an impact the show had on the nation at the time, read out on the Tannoy at a football match! But also, what a **** for announcing it at half time when some folk would have taped it to watch when they got in.

Great to see Utopia on the list. One of it not the best British drama of the past 10 years, cruely cancelled too soon without proper resolution.

Red Riding high on the list. Well deserved it was excellent. Want to watch a few of these I’ve never heard of

i watched the opening.
Five minute montage follwed by Countdown.
Recall the first Film On Fours...P'tang Yang Kipperbang, Walter etc. The Legendary Red Triangle films.

And of course The Comic Strip Presents :ROFLMAO:

UQ: Do sit down children

Julian: What’s going on Uncle Quentin?

d*ck: Yes we thought you’d been kidnapped

(children sit down as Uncle Quentin rests himself against mantelpiece)

UQ: That was all . . . part of my plan

Julian: What exactly do you mean, uncle?

UQ: Now you dreadful children have found out my little secret, I suppose I may as well “Spill the Beans”

d*ck: You mean the kidnap was all a hoax? Whatever for?

UQ: For many years now, your Aunt Fanny and I have not had a proper marital relationship. She’s an unrelenting nymphomaniac. And I’m a screaming homosexual.

(Children all look quizzically at each other)

UQ: It seems pointless trying to explain it to you . . . you little prigs. So we concocted this story to save your aunt from any . . further embarrassment. Now it’s too late. Toby and I are fleeing the country tonight

(Toby cample exhales cigarette smoke through his nostrils as he winks at Uncle Quentin)

UQ: In a fishing boat

Julian (leaps up irate): Well you’re wrong about one thing Uncle Quentin. There is something we can still do. And that is call the police. Homosexuality is still against the law in this country, as well you know it.

UQ: Oh dear. I thought even you Julian might find a morsel of sympathy for your poor old uncle . . . for old times sake.

d*ck (leaping up irate): It’s no good uncle Quentin. You’re a Queer, and that’s the end of it.

(Bells are heard, as Uncle Quentin looks pained)

Girls: Hoorah! The police!

Jam and Jaaaam, The Armando Iannuci Shows and TV Go Home are ones I'd include although I know they're not as well known. Jam especially was one of the most surreal comedy programs I've ever seen and the late night version was ahead of its time. A huge change in style of program from Chris Morris after the Day Today and Brass Eye.

The biggest surprise absence for me though is The IT Crowd.

Drop the Dead Donkey and Phoenix Nights the two glaring omissions for me - DTDD was absolutely brilliant, and only filmed just before transmission so it was effectively real time
The end credits were filmed live as was the intro but the bulk of it was pre recorded still Amazing though how up to date it was.

DTDD was genius

For quite a while my ideal Saturday was a walk down to Ayresome Park followed by an afternoons entertainment watching Bernie S from the Holgate End,back home and the Omnibus edition of Brookside and then a couple of hours in the club with my better half.
Those were the days. Culture, I had it in bucketloads me.
