Changing jobs

How often do you change job?

Friend of mine does it every 3/4 years. Says it’s good for his progression. I’m unsure about that. I would be concerned if I interviewed him. I’ve been with my current employer for 9 years and whilst I had hoped to stay because the work life balance is amazing I feel it’s probably time to move on.

UTB.

After staying in one role for 7 years, I've changed 4 times in 5 years! Hope to stick with the current one for the rest of my career though.

Sounds like it’s time to move on. But you never know. I don’t know how you really get the inside knowledge on a prospective new employer unless you know someone there.

If you are happy and paying the bills, maybe stay and put your spare efforts into something more rewarding. Hobbies, family, volunteering?

Been in the current job 5 1/2 years, made decent progression but feel like if I wanted a decent pay wise I’d have to move on. I feel like I should start possibly looking now before I become fed up.

I started work at 16 as an apprentice and had 24 jobs between that and retiring last year at age 63 with just 3 weeks when I was not employed, either waiting for a contract paperwork, confirmation of start date or site confirmation where I'd be stationed.

That probably works out at nearly 2 years per job, but some were short contracts - shortest 3 months, longest stint at any one place just under 6 years.

Now? Never been happier.

The days of being a one company person are mostly gone but it really depends what industry you are in and what stage of your career.

Loyalty is not very well rewarded in most companies. If a company can get away with not raising wages they won't buy if someone leaves and they need to attract someone only then do get reassess the market rate, or they react to someone leaving by offering them more to stay when really they should have been more proactive and paid people what they are worth.

The easiest way to get pay increases is therefore to job hop. Depending on the role I might see someone having loads of jobs as a good thing but in others I might see them as not with investing in or that they haven't had enough time to gain in-depth experience.

If you are in a public sector job like NHS or teacher then there's no negotiating pay and it's all a lot more transparent but progression can be restrictive.

28 years in same organisation but have done a few different roles over that period. There’s always been something new to try, looks like another opportunity on the way for the next 3/4 years that will give me a new challenge.

Got offered a few different roles over the years externally including opportunities to earn a shedload but never been driven by money, although was on the brink of accepting a couple of times. Could have earned a relative fortune but didn’t take the leap, c’est la vie!

Worked from being almost 16 to about 59, including my apprenticeship, I worked for four companies including our own which was for 25 years, actually technically 5 companies because someone bought ours. Haven’t worked for five years, no prizes for guessing which has been the best bit - by a million f*kn years.

Why would you be concerned?

What suits you at 20 .. doesn't suit if your 24 expecting a bairn ..
At 28 ... Kids at school, so she's back at work... World changes again ... Maybe another kid , maybe an extension.. all depends.. etc etc

Getting 10 - 15 years in , in industries inside a TS postcode has long gone ...

I've had, well technically 3 full time jobs, but the first was 8 months at my own choice, following that, 2, 19 years and now 7 years.

Been with the same company for 15 years. Across my entire career, around 20 years, have changed jobs on average every 5 years, so yeah, had 4 jobs...working my way up each time...

Started out as a casual..only paid when I worked and was like that for nearly 2 years, but was young then and didn't bother me so much. A chance came up for a full time continuing role that all casuals applied for and was lucky enough to get it..and never looked back. It was all good as a mate I beat to the job also got a full time role a year later, if you were decent at your job you did eventually..

I have been through a few horrible change plans though and associated redundancy. I was given a redundancy letter in 2016 but was fortunate to get another role before that kicked in, some didn't.

I was hopeless when I was young. Went through a series of 'careers' and was rubbish/unhappy/disinterested in all of them. Eventually went back to college and retrained in my mid-thirties and have never looked back since. It's so important to be happy in your chosen work. I'll never retire now until/unless health forces it.
