Carrick tactically set us up badly

I think he got it wrong. I doubt we would have won anyway but the way we played meant they didn't have to create anything because we created their chances for them. If we had sat deep and defended we could have frustrated them. We didn't need to win, just to not lose. We didn't have enough fit attackers to play the way we did anyway. Men behind the ball, defend the lead, allow them to throw men forwards and leave Forss and Rogers high and wide as out balls and occasional counters.

Yes, it's completely different to the usual way we play but a team that was out of form, behind in the tie and desperate for a goal weren't given a challenge to create something. They were handed it on a platter.

Who do we park the bus with?

I mean.. not much movement there due to the players we had available.. not THAT much of a difference.

We were just totally outmatched tonight. I think most Boro fans will agree that we had our cup final last week, where we won 1-0, but it probably should have been 1-4.

Let’s not get upset with what happened tonight as we know the gap between us and the Prem is all that and more.

If we were to get promoted we would be like Luton, Burnley and all those who have gone up from the unfashionable side of football.

I’m glad, I like many others witnessed the time when we were part of the breakaway league and experienced the optimism and the opportunity to be part of something special. However big business has taken over so much so it’s like trying to get a cheap room at the Savoy — it isn’t going to happen.

20 years ago we won the league cup, this time around we managed the semis— we did ourselves proud by winning the first leg and came to the Bridge with a great following— we put ourselves back on the map.

Congrats Boro!!

We were never going to win over two legs and I’m surprised many were getting carried away. Stamford Bridge has never been a good ground for Boro, even when we were a Premier League team.

Last night showed the difference between spending £100 million on a World Cup winner and signing someone from Rotherham for less than a million. The gulf in class is huge.

I think Carrick was correct in his pre-match assessment. Boro couldn’t just sit back and defend, but ultimately the execution to play from the back wasn’t great. We got away with one against Rotherham on Saturday. Chelsea were never going to let those mistakes go.

A lot of practice on the training ground is needed on this over the next week.

We cant play engel and clarke at championship level in a back 4 to setup against chelsea that way was disasterous. We should have setup with a back 5 with Dijksteel at right wingback. Worst tatic of all was to let glover pass every single ball out short that was lunacy.

It's not about changing players. The players we picked could have played a different way. It didn't need a huge change of personnel to be better, just do less dangerous things with it. Be sensible with the ball, leave fewer gaps at the back.

It probably wouldn't have worked, they are a much better team than us, but we might not have gifted them the tie in the way that we did. We were only going to beat Chelsea if we had a great day and they had a bad one but we had a terrible day. Sometimes it is better to just minimise the potential to make mistakes.

I think the playing out from the back was frustrated by not having any options up the pitch. No coburn to play it long to, no lath or jones for a ball in behind.

We did the best with the fit players available. I don't see we really had other options.

If both clubs had their best eleven available, and both played at 100% then they'd batter us all day long. They've spent millions, their team/squad is full of internationals and a few really top drawer footballers we had no right to think otherwise. We had our day in the sun in the first leg where we clung on, we fought like beavers and they missed countless chances and on another day they win that leg by a similar scoreline to last night.

We had to play out of our skin last night and hope they had another shocker to stand any hope whatsoever, it was the slimmest of slim chances and it turns out that they turned up and we never, we made some poor decisions on and off the field and were beaten by the better team. It happens, im not sore about that, im still more annoyed about the Rotherham game than i am about last night.

I do think sticking with playing it out from the back was a disaster but we had no out ball, long ball to who? Nobody there to hold the ball up, not with the team on the pitch anyway. If we had our best XI available i think its a totally different system and scoreline. I'm not saying we win or get to the final but i think Carrick had his hands tied with just what he had available to him.
