can you hear your neighbours?

Ours are loud but not loud loud, but late 70s deaf loud. I hear her from my office almost every day sometimes from 5am, she is on the phone to someone.. I wish we had a detached house at times, but that still wouldn't change the garden issues in the summer :)

Family next door husband works away during week she likes to shout at em including f&cing at her kids especially getting em ready 4 school , I shout back telling her to shut up. Not my kids. Shes awful.

Lived in a modern semi as a kid.
Constant noise from neighbours due to poor noise insulation. TV, toilets, arguments....
That's why I have only lived in detached houses as an adult.

Only have neighbours on one side and they're no bother. Hardly hear a thing since they moved in. The girl before them liked a shout but not a problem either.

neighbours on one side (not attached) are a lovely couple with a great son, about 12 yo, always happy to have a chat, wave on a morning, all the stuff which nice neighbors do

tosser on the other side (attached - we're in a semi) is an absolute bell-end to the point where we have had to keep a diary for the last 2 years. his partner left him 6 weeks after they bought the house together and he cant afford it so has had a string of housemates and they behave as if they are still students with TV, music, video games on so loud we cant hear our TV. just after she left he was stood outside his back door smoking and crying one night (about midnight) so we invited him in, he broke down again, drank our beer, etc. since then though we have asked him politely several times to keep it down and i get told that it's his house and he can do what he wants. one housemate lost his wallet and keys and came home at 4am on a Monday morning braying on our door to get me to ring the owner (the main tosser). when i told him i didn't have the number to call he tried to force his way into the house jamming his foot in the door, this went on for about half an hour and he started accusing me of being racist - apparently i called him a leprechaun and a student (he is N Irish and was a student, but i'm not aware of either of those things being either real in the first instance, or a race). i called him neither of those things. Tosser #1 then comes out having heard the commotion and proceeds to tell me he's going to break my wife's neck and kill our cats.

i'm afraid i lost it at this point and ended up walloping the housemate. tosser #1 then tries to jump over the fence to help his mate so he had to get a bat as he was coming over (i'm really not a violent man under normal circumstances!). my wife was on the phone to the police at this point and operator could hear everything that was going on. they turned up quickly and they were told to go to bed or be arrested if they were called out again, one copper gave me their mobile and told us to call direct if anything else occurred

he's on his own now as the last housemate moved out before lockdown, although his mum occasionally comes to stay for the weekend - he is not a well man as we've heard him screaming many times including at the oven for trying to burn his eyes out when he opened the oven door, he sometimes just stands in the kitchen in a catatonic state and we've heard his mum through the wall pleading with him to knock the drink and drugs on the head. he still manages to hold down a job and has been to rehab on at least one occasion

the house is up for sale so hopefully he'll be gone soon, although it's been on a year. we have a bottle of champagne on ice for this occasion! we dont even speak anymore if we pass, i've got nothing pleasant to say to him

sorry that was a long one!

I'm detached but can hear my bellend neighbour clear as day. He's a biker and 'leader' of the community. Always saying on Facebook how he used to be a dog trainer, even though his dogs bark all night and day, he opens the door and they run away all the time. Has rants about people breaking lockdown rules, even though he also has since the start. Yesterday on Facebook he was ranting about break ins on our estate, he goes out for the day and leaves his back door wide open.

Sorry had to get that off my chest, he's a massive bellend!

Thats awful Artie, I hope he sells up soon and the new folk are decent, you deserve a break. Environmental Health have noise recording equipment that they can loan people if after keeping a set of diaries they consider it a potential nuisance. Takes a lot of angst before they’ll act though. Best of luck with things in the meantime (y)

I’m lucky, I live in a Victorian terraced house but I’ve got a nice female couple one side of me and a friendly community spirited single bloke in his 50’s on the other. There are no screaming kids, no Barking dogs and the walls are thick enough to keep the sounds of the neighbours out. We all enjoy a glass of wine over the fence in the summer and the bloke‘s got loads of tools and ladders that he lends me.

We've got a family in next doors semi that had 5 kids and 2 dogs when we moved in.
3 eldest have since moved out and you can hear them now & again but nothing too intrusive, however their job situation changed a few months back and they were leaving the dogs at home all day and they were barking virtually non-stop.
Had a word with them and they were very apologetic but they obviously still have to leave them behind some days.

As it happens I've learnt how to shut them up............... I bray on the dividing wall and yell at them to shut up .........it works as well :)

Neighbours on one one side... can't stand them. Smug, arrogant, early retirement couple. EVERY day during the initial lockdown they had people in and out; parties, loud get togethers, sing songs in the garden, kids running amok. Safe to say we don't get on!

It's a pet hate of mine when you can hear every word of people's conversations even though they're nowhere near. Why talk so loud?
We've got this problem with some of our neighbours. We live in a quiet village where everyone behaves accordingly apart from the people across from us who are loud all of the time, and think it's ok to swear with kids around (including their grandchildren). Don't get me wrong, everyone has times where their kids are a bit loud or they have a party or something in the garden occasionally, but these people are loud 100% of the time

Cheers Col - it's just extra annoying because our previous neighbour was absolutely spot on (Charlie Charlton of BBC Newcastle breakfast fame and Friday Look North lunchtime news). we would look after each other's cats when on holiday, take out and bring each other's bins back in, that sort of thing, always have a chat when we saw each other. In fact we were invited to their wedding. However she got married and moved elsewhere, really miss her as a neighbour though, cracking lass

the council have been OK, but essentially because he is not a tenant, but a homeowner, there's very little they can do and it takes forever. As his house in for sale, we have seriously considered buying it as a) a rental investment so b) we get rid of him and c) have some control over who lives there. We are also having some fitted units built in the dining room (which adjoins his sitting room) either side of the fireplace and putting some insulation/sound proofing in behind them to dampen the noise a bit, especially when he's had a drink and starts with his loud singing of anti-English songs (he's from NI hence all his housemates have been as well)

Sorry to here about your troubles Artie.I hope they improve soon.Nice and quiet up here in WN. Must be the rarified atmosphere. Most people on our estate have been here for donkeys years we moved in in 1976 and there are loads who have been here longer than that. The Fiddlers pub is just across the road but like most it has been quiet since March.

i've had many a pint in the Fiddlers in years gone by, especially when i lived in Felling, it's a decent boozer. Good mate of mine plays footy for them - you might know him as SHandy if you do know him, great lad but wears t-shirts too small to show off his massive physique :)

LF has always been great in every aspect, just this one thing. for the most part it's very quiet and peaceful, especially where we are and we do have some great neighbours. As i say, he moved in with his lass because they thought it was a great place to be (it is IMO) but she realised what a mistake she'd made after just 6 weeks and left him so he acts like he lives with the students in Jesmond, which is fine, just do it in Jesmond with the students!

One side is a woman whose husband died last month so it's quiet.

Other side young couple who bought themselves what I took to be a paddling pool but apparently it's a hot tub. They make a lot of noise when they're, er, enjoying themselves. I call her squealer. Not to her face though. The house is up for sale which is a relief.

The Council do have powers they can use on owner occupiers. I appreciate yours is a complex case based on his personal substance abuse. If any equipment is causing noise TV, Stereos etc they have the power to seize equipment. They can also serve noise abatement notices for persistent ongoing nuisance which a breach of carries a hefty fine. Some councils have also adopted powers under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 via their community safety teams. Some use these powers more widely and quickly than others mind as Tory cuts affected their usage and ways of working.

I understand you are directly affected as you are the other semi, but have you spoken with his neighbour at the other side to see if he/she/they are affected in any way? I have known my local unit to serve an injunction on a problem owner occupier, especially if other agencies are involved or concerned through a households behaviour ie police and or other emergency services. Your situation is clearly not straight forward unfortunately, and you have my sympathy, your suggested option is not a bad idea and as you say would have some control. Living next door to their landlord might help cramp peoples behaviours.

Appreciate your concern and advise Col (y)

The problem with the neighbour on the other side is that he's too nice! He lives on his own and is the most meek and mild fella you could ever meet and while i know he does hear noise as well and it annoys him, he just doesn't want to cause a fuss, or create a scene.

We've reached the point whereby when it does get loud, which is much less than it was a year ago to be fair, we just put up with it. We've got far more pressing concerns to be honest than a tosser neighbour and whilst it's a horrible situation, i don't want to exacerbate it. His time will come, but for now, I'm just biding mine

one neighbour next door is absolutely spot on single middle age lady church goer no trouble at all. The other side the mother talks like hyacinth bucket, but screams and swears at her kids on the morning, my Mrs reported her to social services for the abuse she was giving her kids. This seems to have had the desired effect shes no longer swearing half as much. we have since found out shes a middleclass wine plonky, hence the moods on the morning. her teenage son looks like the most unhappy kid i have ever seen, sad really. Neighbours out the back take the **** with loud music at parties in the summer, i just don't understand how people think its ok to be so loud, late at night, with no consideration for others.

it's sad that folk cant just have some common decency and show some respect and consideration for others, they're just basic principles for being a decent human being IMO, and not difficult to adopt either, or at least they shouldn't be
