I don't think listing a bunch of clubs that have spent big for years to get to where they are is a particularly strong argument.

Of course, the Emirati takeover of Man City had no impact on their league position either.

If you took your Boro tinted glasses off, be honest with yourself, wouldn’t you much rather be in Newcastle’s position right now?

I wouldn't be trying to claim that being owned by a vastly wealthy country that is investing a fortune wasn't having a major impact on Boro's results if the Saudis owned us.

I'd also not be going to the matches either, but that's a different story.

It's more than any other club in the world spent in January, it also had a direct and noticeable effect on their ability to stay up.

The money is a massive factor.

Howe is clearly doing a great job there right now, but the Saudi takeover has had a huge impact.
To say otherwise is nonsense.
But they spent barely anything the previous summer. Of the signings they made Guimaraes didn’t start until March and Trippier only played 6 games. I’m not claiming the money didn’t help but Howe had already really started to turn things around before any impact of the spending was really felt

I F***ing hate Newcastle and hate everything about the Saudi takeover, but that’s a remarkable job with barely any change to the squad.

Really, look at the first team players they’ve signed and who are playing. Pope, Trippier, Botman, Guimares (who’s absolutely brilliant), Dan Burn (who’s average).

I double take when I see their team sheet and then see how well they’re playing. Howe’s doing amazing, didn’t expect it at all but it’s not just about money.

Do people talk about UAE’s horrendous human rights record? Or do they just enjoy watching them?

All things pass, all outrages pass.

It's quite frequently talked about, even now.

It was a huge topic of conversation at the time of their takeover too.

Have you got one for the last 10 years?

Have you got one for the last 10 years?

The Saudis have only been there 1 year, so what relevance would that have

The clubs that finish higher in the table are more often that not the ones that have spent the most.

You get the odd outlier with upstarts, but it's been that way for years.

Because that squad has been under invested for years, you can’t just suddenly pick one point in time to show they have spent a fortune and say that’s why they are doing well. Other clubs have spent huge amounts on their squads season after season so have no need to spend such huge amounts in one window

They are 10th in net spend in the last 10 years, so no one can say Howe is doing well because money alone. They are outperforming sides who have spent way more on their squads

So that's two highly rated England internationals (one who'd just won La Liga), a Ligue 1 winning player, a highly rated Brazilian International and Dan Burn.
