Bye Bye Hackney?

We sold Akpom, Rogers, Spence, Tav for big money

We don't need to sell Hackney surely?

Unless he wants away. I personally think he would benefit from another season here but it's football.

I have more faith in Carrick and the club as we stand than I have for years

Digger Lad, an ITK poster on OneBoro, reporting that this is a done deal - 15 mil (+ 3 in add-ons). Way too cheap - and the wrong club in West Ham imo. Obviously he'll be on way more than we could offer but still think the lad's been badly advised. West Ham could be flirting with relegation next season the way they're going.

if he wants to go he can for me,personally i think hed be better off staying here a while longer for more playing experience,he may find himself sitting a lot on the bench, time will tell tho

Really in two minds about Hackney - on one hand we know what a quality player he is and from watching him play for England U21s it's clear he can make the step up like Rogers (hell, he's probably there already.)

On the other hand, he's been injured for a large portion of the season and we've arguably not really been a worse team without him in it - bringing in Law McCabe after having him train and travel to away games with the senior squad for most of this season would suggest he's being groomed as Hackney's eventual replacement anyway. I think we'll do a deal with Forest for O'Brien so losing Hackney wouldn't be too much a blow.

The rumoured fee is a bit low - we're talking about a potential future England international, but £15m upfront would certainly give us enough to bolster the squad for next season.

We know the club's model is to sell our best players and replace them with potential stars like Brentford and Brighton did on their way to the PL, so if this Hackney news is true we can't be too disappointed.

Without looking it up, we make a loss of about £25m-£30m a year before player sales. We could probably plod on without selling but if the club is ever going to build a solid financial base then selling Hackney is probably what is best for us.

Replacing hackney with obrien would be a terrible downgrade. We need to keep our best players its that simple.

Pretty obvious when he wasn’t selected the last couple of games. Right decision too. He’s a decent player but not the level of technical ability we want.

We’ve had three months of everyone saying McGree wants out, and it was all bollox. Can we all just chill our beans and stop pretending that anyone is in the know about hackneys future, they’re not.

I think we are looking to build the side right now.

I would put these rumours alongside the Viduka insurance money at the moment.

It’s highly unlikely that any person on a message board has first hand knowledge of Boro transfer operations.

Our best run of results this season was when Hackney wasn’t available. McCabe looked very much in the Hackney mode on Saturday so to allow us to bring in the players Carrick thinks we need, including meeting Ayling’s wages I wouldn’t be too upset to see Hackney get his big move.

I think it's a little too early to say, Forest won't be making any decisions whilst they're season is still ongoing, especially given they might still get relegated.

I think there's a decent chance he'll be back, assuming the club want that of course.

Far too much expectation being put on McCabe already. He had a decent full debut, nothing spectacular, no major mistakes. Just to hold his own was great, given his age. But he’s 17, 4 years younger than Hackney. It’ll likely be two years before he has his big breakthrough.

I'm more inclined to believe this rumour than the Archer rumour.
For £15-£20m we could bring in 2 decent championship level players and a couple of development players which is still building the overall strength of the squad and laying the foundations for the future of the club.
We also don't seem to stand in the way of players who want to make the step up(as long as the finances are right on the deal). Some might say that we can't keep selling our better players which is somewhat correct but looking at it from another angle it is also a selling point for attracting young talent like VDB, Rogers, Forss,Gilmore and at the same time makes the club more financially sustainable for the future.

I can’t imagine us selling Hackney. We don’t have another player who is that good at playing his role. I’m not sure he can replace Howson, but he’s closer to being that than any other midfielders on our books.
We don’t need another striker if LL and Coburn are both fit.
I would definitely keep Ayling, the jury is out for the LB position, but we’re stacked with options at CB and attacking MF.
It’s a really strange situation. I’m not sure we have had a closed season like it. If everyone is fit we’re not short anywhere really other than a back up for Howson.

I think Hackney has a good 7 plus goals in him and is good at linking attacking moves together . He hasn’t even completed a season here yet .
Tge more I think if it there I can see next season will be one to remember

Scott is a far better player than Hackney though. Based on that, £18 million is probably fair

No he's not. You could make the argument that Scott is slightly further on in his development than Hackney as he's played some games in the Premier League but Hackney who's played more times for the England U21s than Scott is not an inferior player to Scott in any way.

If we want to be serious about promotion then it's no more 'projects', we've got enough of them. And I don't mean we should necessarily be signing 'proven' established players either. Just that sweet spot really, can go straight in the first team and not look like a fish out of water but at the same time still have development potential.

However I'm well aware that's easier said than done 🤷‍♂️
