Brentford- the club to emulate

I don’t think yesterday’s match shows that Brentford have discovered the holy grail.

Firstly they do have an extremely wealthy pro gambler owner who has piled loads of money into the club. Like it or not, that will help with any strategy they’ve got.

Plus they are not the only club who have ever tried to buy cheap and sell big. There are plenty of examples of selling clubs who do all that.

Maybe the gambling links and statistical algorithms appeal to a few on here who have an interest in that sort of thing.

Do I think what is it? You said do you think one or two players coming good is no sign of a long term production line of buying cheap and selling big. I just said have a look at who they’ve sold over the last few years, it isnt 1 or 2

Andre Gray £11m
Scott Hogan £9.5m
Paleteiro £6m
Chris Mepham £12m
Ryan Woods £6.5m
Nico Yennaris £5m
John Egan £4m
Neal Maupay £20m
Ezri Konsa £12m
Said Benrahma £25m
Ollie Watkins £28m

Buy big sell cheap seems to be our strategy

Thanks for bothering to post the list 👍

I agree it’s not a bad record of ‘stepping up’ talent but my point is more that to recruit the burgeoning talent they must have the means to attract them. They deal in huge numbers of players, many of which you never hear of.

With that and a new stadium, in London where land and other costs are through the roof, I just have a hunch there is more to Brentford than meets the eye.

Reminds me of when Bournemouth suddenly emerged and we found they were backed by a ‘mysterious’ Russian billionaire.

The wealthier he has got the poorer Steve Gibson's decisions have got.
The thread is about ‘the Brentford model’ not the Boro, unless you are trying to move it onto your own agenda against Boro and Gibson?

I have been offering my opinion on Brentford on this thread apart from one response to Hickton.

But they haven't really 'bought big'.
They have 'bought small' and turned them big.
Having bought small they now have the funds to 'buy bigger' in players like Toney.
We have done the opposite.

Not sure I agree with that.
Most of their successful sell on players were bought for what is a fairly sizeable fee for the leagues they were bought from.
Their scouting has clearly been superb, and they've unearthed plenty of gems, but they've not been cheap purchases at the point they're bought.
They just look cheap after the fact because they've performed and been sold for much more.

I'll take the list from above

Andre Gray - £300,000+ for a player in the National League
Scott Hogan - £750,000 for a player in League Two
Jota - £1m+ for a player from Secunda Division
Chris Mepham - Brentford academy player
Ryan Woods - £1m for a League Two player
Nico Yennaris - Can't find a fee, but they signed him from Arsenal in League One so I imagine it was decent
John Egan - £500,000 for a player from League One
Neal Maupay - £1.2m for a player in Ligue 2
Ezri Konsa - £2.5m for a player from League One
Said Benrahma - £2.7m for a Ligue 1 player who'd spent the previous 2 seasons on loan in Ligue 2.
Ollie Watkins - £1.8m for a player in League Two

Your thinking is quite one dimensional.
With all due respect, it’s not a question of one dimensional thinking, it’s simply that if I disagree with you or anybody else I will offer a counter opinion.

This is a Boro forum, thats what posters do, if you don’t hear from me I probably agree with what you have posted.

But your list simply proves my point.
Nothing above £2.7m.....whereas we have just spent £2.8m for Akpom.

Thanks for posting this, some sizeable ‘gambles’ in there (no pun intended) so clearly taking the pick of the bunch by offering more transfer fee and presumably wages to land the player.

Sign of a very well financed Championship club.

I don't think it does.

That's just a list of their successful sell ons.
I presume there is a decent number of players they've also paid significant fees for that haven't panned out.

They're paying very competitive transfer fees for lower league players.

We always overpay for players, we paid £3m for Marvin Johnson, but that doesn't mean that Brentford's signings are cheap.
It just means ours are daft.

You could look as the summer before last as an example of us doing similar to Brentford.
Paid £1m for Bola, £2m for Dijksteel.
Both sizeable fees for players from League One, but they all look to have panned out as decent signings that I could see us making money on if we sell them.
Browne from West Ham for £300,000 could prove to be a steal if he recovers from his injury well.

Scout - Buy - Sell - Reinvest
pretty much.

Watkins bought for a couple of mill at 21 year old and sold 4 years later for 28mill
Benrahma bought for pittance as a 22 year old and sold 3 years later for 20mill

Dasilva and Forss were free and Mbeumo was cheap, already worth about 20mill between them.

Before that it was Maupay bought as a 21 year old for 1.6mill and sold for 20mill

Before that they made good money on John Egan to Sheff U, Mepham to Bournemouth, Harlee Dean and Jota.

Even before that it was Button to Fulham, Andre Grey (bought for 500k, sold for 9mill), Scott Hogan.

They have done this for a good 7 or 8 years now. They have a playing ethos that is about quick attacking play, persevering with talented young players, and looking to improve them. A lot is made of 'moneyball', but there is more to it than that, it wouldn't work if they didn't play attacking creative football, because that style is what excites young attacking players to come to the club.

Speculate to accumulate. They pay those fees if the players are young enough to improve and have sell on fees.

To be honest, any teenager that holds a first team shirt down in League One or Two isn't a massive gamble, because they are doing it on ability not atheltiscism, they are barely 'men' and can hold their own. 1mill gets you nothing these days, some of those fees are over the average, yet not bank busting. Those 11 players you have listed, were signed for a combined fee significantly less than we Britt Assombalonga, about 4 million less.

I know
I'm very impressed by the Brentford model of doing things, but I think it's a misrepresentation to imply they're doing it on a shoestring.

They've invested a lot of money over the years to get where they are now, that they've recovered plenty through transfer fees doesn't change that.

The fact we spunked away far more under Monk doesn't either.
