Brentford- the club to emulate

So clever. Great decision making over last four or five years.
Lost two best players in the summer for £50million. Already they look a better team.

recruitment spot on.
Scout - Buy - Sell - Reinvest

for a ‘small club’ they have built up something special there. Fair play.

Said the same on another thread

Player Recruitment is more important than ever to get right. Unfortunately we look light years behind. Mind you, our most recent signings look ok.

Hopefully lessons have been learnt since the spell we bought Britt, Saville and Fletcher. Selling clubs really had our pants down there.

No chance with Gibbo in charge. His decision making and long term planning is appalling. His football judgement is poor. Prime example him thinking Pulis is some sort of football guru.

The positives are when he does appoint a good manager, arguably more luck than judgement, he will back them (as far as possible). He might gamble from time to time but always seems to have a plan B and financially I feel were in safe hands. He won't let us get into serious trouble on that front and for that reason I'm quite happy with him in charge. He's a very capable businessman obviously.

But he's been here how long? Plenty of talk of long term planning, developing a style etc. in that time. He just doesn't know how to deliver it and/or can't identify the right people to do it for him.

Warnock is perfect for him as it's someone he'll trust implicitly who genuinely does know what he's doing.

To have a set up like Brentford where it doesn't really matter who the manager is though? Forget it, the leadership at the club is nowhere near capable of a project like that. We're still better off than the vast majority though.

This has been said for the last four years, sadly we would need someone with a brain in charge of our recruitment dept instead of an international wine merchant who thought Gary O’Neil was the best midfielder outside of the premiership

They're a good side to watch at this level but how many chances did we create against them?

If they go up they'll need to up their recruitment game another level.

Fair play to them today though, they thoroughly deserved the win.

We’ve been so used to spunking money paying way over the odds. We are not shrewd or cute enough” to do a Brentford.

And a big pull they have over us - they are London based. That is in no way a detrimental comment to a club who, unfortunately, is way above us in most aspects.

Very smart club with a very smart owner, their heavy data analysis approach is hardly surprising considering he made his money as a professional gambler! Benham also owns FC Midtjylland.
The amount of money Brentford have made in transfers in the last 4-5 years is astonishing.

We have an owner who is running the club the same as he was 20 years ago when he could just throw money at the problems he caused the club, don’t expect anything to change.

We are in a stronger position now due to NW, but I would fully expect the 50 million we likely get for Fry/Dijksteel/Tav to be ***ed away on expensive loans and big money signings on huge contracts close to 30 where we won’t ever get our money back, and the entire process to start all over again.

Historically we are a much bigger club with better resources.
They have very little history but have acted very shrewdly.
They have made fantastic strategic decisions that are now paying off.
I can see them getting promoted and having a half decent chance of staying up.

We have made mistake after mistake on recruitment with little evidence that much has changed.
Remember the 'Mowbray Rolodex'?
Be nice to think changes have been made but I fear we are still asleep on the job.

We seem to be in constant 'fire fighting' mode. Applying sticking plasters all over the place.
£2.8m for Akpom for goodness sake.
Meanwhile little club like Brentford keep getting stronger and stronger.
Didn't they abandon their reserve team? Meanwhile we have Category A Academy Status but seem to see very little players coming through.
Not saying one approach on 'youth' is better than the other - but teams like Brentford just seem more 'switched on'.
They seem to have a savvy mindset - acting like a thriving sharp business.

I agree Brentford have a good model and just missed promotion to the premier league last season. It's a long term project and they seem to get a lot of the management elements right. When we had our best ever finish in the premiership 04/05 they were two divisions behind. I just can't believe how much more we must have spent than them to end up behind them now. That said we now seem to be on the upward part of the circle but we have to do much better with our incoming transfers

To be fair what they are achieving is remarkable.
They are batting way above their average.
Bournemouth achieved something similar but needed Russian money to get to the PL.

Based on average attendance size its like Barnsley or Bristol Rovers getting into the PL.

The worry is it's another club filling a 'space' in the PL. Boro traditionally can claim to be a PL Club in terms of attendances but teams like Crystal Palace, Fulham, Brighton, Burnley and others are now pushing ahead of us. Tw@ts.

Could be worse - could be Sunderland - always good to know we can rely on them :) :poop: :poop:

They've looked nailed on for promotion for years now, they always seem to **** it up somehow.

I think they will get promoted this season, but that's because it's a very poor Championship this year.
You can see that from the fact we've lost 4 of our last 6 games and have somehow managed to stay exactly where we were in 7th.
