Boro's top 12 strikers.........................apparently

Funny one isn't it. I agree Boksic wasn't the most prolific scorer but in terms of pure footballing ability I'd have him as our best ever I think, probably just ahead of Mendi and Emmo.

I think I must have seen all Brian Clough’s Ayresome Park goals and although as someone mentions, he “only” played in the second tier, he was way in front of anyone since, and remember he did not take penalties.

I always think Boksic when I think the best player I've seen. I fairly certain we never saw his best, only glimpses. When he turned it on he was on another planet. I don't think he ever got out of 3rd gear for us and it was like he was doing us a favour just by being here, even with the massive wages.

Viduka was obviously brilliant for us and I do think we saw Viduka at the peak of his career but Boksic always looked like he had more to give. He was never prolific so I presume the attitude he showed with us had been there his whole career. With a slightly different attitude he probably could have had the most illustrious career. Viduka was great but lok at the clubs he played for. He never reached the heights he could have done where even Boksic's half-arsed career got him champions league, league titles and ballon d'or nominations.

Pointing out that Clough 'only' played in the second tier is not dismissive, it is as much a fact as it is to say about Slaven (well, apart from his full season in the top flight when he scored 15 goals) or anyone else. Clough played 3 games in the top flight, for another club. Doesn't mean he wasn't very good, but its impossible to know for sure how well he'd have done at the highest level.

Was Viduka a bit unlucky though? (Or maybe didn't make the wisest career choices?).

I still find it hard to believe we got him, at 28, for only £4.5m. He was class for Leeds and pretty much kept them up single handedly the year before. He should've been moving to a bigger club than us. Glad he didn't though!

Played in the champions league and they were title contenders while he was there. Rumours of an attitude problem may have put clubs off, but we never saw it.

In another life he could've had league titles etc. We saw him and Ravanelli up close at the same age. One was a champions league winner, but there's no doubt in my mind who was the better player.

I agree that for both those players we have to temper our respect for what they achieved.

Clough has got 5 of our best 6 ever seasonal league goal tallies, which is definitely significant, but then 3 of our top 4 top flight tallies are Camells, which seems to mean something more. When you add in 2 goals a game at international level, he was definitely at the top of his sport in his time.

Camsell also scored a hatful in the first division (to the tune of 250).

Best player I've ever seen, seeing someone put him lower on a list than Slaven makes me dismiss the list maker as not very bright. Viduka was levels above Slaven in almost every aspect of the game.

Bernie Slaven

Into the top five, Slaven is just behind Fenton in the all-time top scorer rankings, having scored 146 goals in 381 games.

The Irishman played for Boro for eight years in the 80s and 90s, but also turned out for the likes of Port Vale and Darlington in English football, as well as a host of Scottish sides, too.

The 62-year-old went into radio after retiring as a player, presenting shows and providing commentary on Middlesbrough matches with Ali Brownlee.

Sort of Irish though wasn’t he?

Yeah the idea that Slaven was better than Viduka is ludicrous and who knows how good a player Fenton or camsell where compared to today?

To be fair to Mr Slaven though, in his one full season in the top League he scored 18 goals or something, in a team that got relegated. Someone did that today they'd be worth £50 million! I think because he's a bit of a character, people forget how good he was in his prime.
But even as biased as I am I don't think he was better than Viduka!

He did have a great personal season in the top flight, 15 league goals and he had a great season the following year. He’d be a 25m play today, but that’s more a commentary on the madness of modern football fees than on Slaven’s ability. He did have a cracking 4 year spell for us mind, but never showed the all round ability of the duke
