Boro's top 12 strikers.........................apparently

Mark Viduka - my goodness how good was he!

The only player who I've ever seen who had the ability to slow down time whilst he had the ball at his feet in the penalty area.

He's my number one striker by far, the rest are in his wake.
Nobody else close to Viduka in my time watching Boro over the last 50 plus years regularly.
Not anywhere near.

Before my time I wish I’d seen Clough, Camsell, Fenton. Their records are incredible.

Have I fallen into one of them parallel universe things where Juninho never played for us?
Yeah we’re definitely not just on about strikers here are we!

Emo/Mendi don’t touch Juninho. Emo flattered to deceive. Mendi never found consistency. I’d probably argue that Zenden was better than both for us.

But as far as strikers go it’s Viduka all day long. I honestly felt privileged to watch him. When he went up the road I was genuinely heart broken. It’s only looking back now I can blame Keith Lamb.

I think Emerson's "legend" is largely based on two games v Coventry and West Ham.

He was absolutely brilliant in those games, but it was 2 games v comparatively weak opposition.

Not exactly the strongest evidence to suggest he was one of the finest players to pull on the shirt. The fact he never hit those heights again, here or elsewhere, tells its own story.

I'd also throw in the Inter friendly. TBF he did absolutely run the show against future Boro players Festa, Ince and Carbone but it was a pre-season friendly that counted for nothing and we drew 0-0. There are still some Boro fans who seem to judge him on it.

Viduka was injured for a massive part of one of his seasons with us too
He was, and if he hadn't we could have been in the champions league to be honest. We finished 6th and 5 teams went in that year, thanks to the 'we must allow liverpool in' rule. I truly believe if he had stayed fit, we would have played champs league footy

I took a barcode mate with me to the Inter Milan friendly, and we both came out thinking Emerson was possibly going to be one of the absolute great midfielders of all time. The way he dominated Inter's midfield was astonishing at the time. Physically and technically he could have been.....psychologically he just wasn't up to it, didn't ant it enough, wasn't smart enough to manage the 'business' around the sport. Shame really.

7th wasn't it?

Its just interesting how people seem to judge Emerson's 'potential' on a great 90 minutes (well, 3 or 4 matches). Ricard absolutely terrorised some defences in 98/99, they were scared of him, and he equalled the 'legendary' Ravanelli's tally, yet no one ever says "If Ham the Man had his head screwed on better he'd have played for Real Madrid and won the Ballon d'Or" etc. They do say it about Emo.

Emerson had some absolutely crap matches for us, yet his August/September 1996 seems to still go down as the best month any Boro player has ever had for some reason.

Its a bit like the 'Merson got us promoted on his own' fallacy.

As atypical says think it was 7th, but yes I agree.

We also lost Boateng at a key time during the run in. Mendieta for most of the season (the injury ruined him) and Ehiogu I think.

All those stay fit and we finish above Everton who qualified. We weren't far off as it was.

In terms of pure ability Boksic is absolutely miles clear of anybody else. An absolutely outrageously talented footballer, destroyed by injuries
On his day Boksic was good as Juninho, the difference was Juninho had more days. I remember he destroyed the Geordies at Sid James and that chip v Leicester
