Boro move to Digital Ticketing 🎟️

I didn't ring up the club - they phoned me.

So they rang you to explain what they should have been able to explain themselves. So they are monitoring this board for any kick back against the plans. Why don't MFCOfficial register on the board and they can come on here themselves and post their clarifications to the many announcements they make that you have to get clarified Rob.

While I admire the fact you have maintained a Nokia 3310 for nearly 25 years, the fact is it's 2023 and you are incredibly in the minority and as such, the onus is on you to keep up with relevant technology.

Your posts in this thread smack of someone being stubborn just for the sake of it.
Well, I wont get too personal, but you smack of being pompous and arrogant.
Lets both agree to keep our own counsel(y)

Lets have a survey of who accesses this site using their "mobile devices" ?

I cant and I`m certain others cant either. (y)
I use carrier pigeon to a fellow fan at Whitby who then uses his new technological amstrad thingymajig to write what is on the note attached to the pigeons leg on here. The pigeon has a fair few miles on the clock though and gets lost in thunderstorms. I may need to upgrade to the new fangled pony express I suppose, but I am hearing good things about the GPO’s new telegram service too, decisions, decisions 🤔

From a personal perspective, this is a very welcome move by MFC. My Season Card is one of the few things I physically have to carry around these days, but pretty much everything else is on my phone (gig tickets/railcard/train tickets/credit card/banking, etc). Over the past month I have been to Glastonbury and had a weekend in London and spent literally zero cash in the process. I personally find paying for things by Apple Pay more convenient and easier to keep track of what I'm spending (too much usually!).

Not having to wonder where my Season Card is every couple of weeks will be a positive outcome for me, but I appreciate that not everyone is able or willing to adapt to a digital society. I'm sure though that MFC will not exclude anyone and for the minority that can't or won't use the new system, alternatives will be available. But for the growing majority that live their lives via their smartphone, this will be seen as a good move by the club.

I empathise entirely with those that feel anxious about the ever changing world around us, although at the same time I find it mildly ironic that they are using an online platform to express such anxiety.

Serious question Will. I have never been to Glastonbury and probably never will at the age I am at now. Still go to loads of gigs though. How do you keep your phone charged for three day at the festival I assume there is charging facilities but thats a lot of time hanging around. When I went to festivals it was just kipping in a sleeping bag under a tree or something.

It's best part of 6 days now! But the answer is a power bank. I fully charged my phone, watch and power bank before setting off at 6am on the Wednesday and then put phone and watch on charge from the power bank in my tent each night. The power bank ran out on Sunday morning but my phone was fully charged at that point and lasted until we set off back on Monday morning, at which point I could charge it again.

The thing is why have they announced this then shut down the information page. Atleast like make the announcement when the information is made available of what people are going to be expected to do. This is how people get anxious and nervous as they don't know the process of what's going to happen.

I get mine picked up and dropped off by the travelling post office ;)

So instead of carrying a card, you need a phone and a power bank and hope that they both last.

Be another 6 month before anyone on CEEFAX finds out ☹️

Season ticket holder I know has no smartphone, no computer, no email, no internet, only basic terrestial tv channels so no sky, virgin, or freeview. He has followed Boro for 50 years and has managed alright so far with out entering the digital world.
50? Assuming he is in his late fifties or early 60s then, I genuinely struggle to understand how someone of that age group can function well without any of those things. Not doubting your post in any way but I feel like he is missing out a bit. What does he do for work?

I suppose you could be talking about someone who didn't support Boro til later in life though.

Obviously people can have whatever phone they want, but I'm not actually sure if there is anything admirable about it as such. A smartphone is just a phone with easy internet access, not as if Roofie has shunned the internet entirely (28,500+ posts on here and counting).

You've answered a completely different point. I was responding to one about speed getting through a barrier. I live in London. I encounter barriers with people ahead fiddling with their smartphones on a daily basis. It's not quicker.
I would counter that. I've had a few paper based tickets faill. Now that's slow. Plus more and more people are paying for the tube on their watch. Now THAT'S quick

Digital train tickets are great also until your phone runs out of charge.
In fairness, a large proportion of trains now have USB charging points. Some of them even have wireless chargers on the table itself (ok thats only the fancy new ones and you need a newish smartphone for it to work) but your phone battery dying isn't half as bad as losing your actual ticket (which wasn't exactly impossible before the advent of digital tickets). Conductors would invariably make you buy a new one, which to London now at rush hour for me (on the day) is in excess of £200 one way. At least now you can ask someone to borrow a charger (if you don't carry one yourself, which I do, for various devices not just for my ticket).

I wasn't talking about paper tickets or watches. I was (as I have explained more than once) replying to a specific point about 'phones being quicker than cards. They aren't. You get your card out. You place it on the reader. You are through. You get your 'phone out. You fiddle around with it a bit. You place it on the reader. You are through. That's at best just as quick, but often slower. As observed on an almost daily basis.
