Boro footballers who we never appreciated at the time.

I think this thread shows how poor judges some of our fans were at judging players.

I remember McLaren getting dogs abuse at the games and online for a while for not playing a very young Danny Graham. When you think back he was behind, Hasselbaink, Viduka, Job, Nemeth, Maccarone and then also behind Yakubu the following season.

Danny Mills doesn't get many mentions from the same successful side.

I think that's probably down to him not being with us for all that long. I'd say of the season he was with us the first half of it was really good and the second half wasn't all that.

He'd had a big falling out with Lamb and Gibbo in january behind the scenes though which is probably why.

true, most fans have little more than a cursory knowledge. They see effort and individual skill, they complain at managers tactics, but have no knowledge, and have never studied themselves. It's like complaining that Stephen Hawking is talking nonsense on his string theory, when you got a D in physics 25 years ago and haven't read a text book since.

Danny Graham rightly didn't get a kick, and it was right to sell him for his own career.

Bamford had plenty of haters amongst fans (although probably a minority).

"Can't hold the ball up"
"Too nice/no nasty streak"
"Had too many clubs"
"Dyche didn't rate him".

Was also clearly very under appreciated by the club at the time.

I'll also throw in Vossen. Plenty weren't convinced by him either.

Yet for me easily the best forward partnership we've had in a decade.

Vickers had an amazing first few months in the PL in 1995. Tailed off after that.
Steve was player of the season that season.
He was miles better than Whyte. Him and Pearson when fit was a good pairing. He suffered because of playing with poor partners when Pearson was injured.
He was a good player Steve Vickers and extremely under-appreciated.

Completely agree with jgs. And it's not a question of being entertained and winning. Tomlin was a very effective player for us, certainly more so than downing on his return.

Was quality under venables as well.

I'm going to chuck townsend into the mix as well, he hardly ever gets mentioned these days but was the all round box-to-box midfielder when he was with us. 500K too got to be one of our best bargain signings. Would love a player like him in our midfield these days.

edit: I guess townsend was probably really appreciated at the time, so not as relevant for this thread.

Not necessarily in the same league as some of the names mentioned but...Lewis Wing.

Scored 7 goals last year from midfield in a terrible team who generally couldn’t create or score. Nearly all long shots created by himself.

I can’t help feeling he’ll go somewhere and be a huge success.

Yes agree Mustoe was premier League
Ramirez only Championship Level
Temperament and application are important parts of what goes towards being a "good player". Mustoe was excellent at his job. In his playing days walks into any side outside of the top 10 in the premier league for me.

Ramirez was more talented. And on his day a better player. But over the course of his career how often was it "his day"? The fact he's struggled to nail down a starting spot in sides for most of his career tells you everything you need to know I think.
