Blackpool Covid and Injuries

Sheffield United v Hull has been postponed now. So that's given Sheff Utd 2 weeks rest between they last played until they face Boro on Saturday. While Boro have had to play 2 matches this week (presuming Blackpool goes ahead).

Either they all get played (with youth players if needed), or they should have all been called off to keep things fair.

Nothing I've seen makes me think 2 weeks+ of rest gives a team an advantage.

A week, maybe 10 days, endures freshness. More than that, players start losing match sharpness

Cubs are taking the p!ss. Either they all get played (with youth players if needed, or they should have all been called off).

FFS, don't say that lol.

At least two times Boro went on a roll they cancelled the respective season's for the first, then second World Wars.

That why I'd be building a nuclear shelter should we ever threaten a top four position in the country again

Just thought of one other factor, how do you actually prove a player is injured. Is it just me or could they say they have more injuries than they do.

I'm not sure the time off is a good thing. Just look at UTD last night who'd not played in 16 days. The mags played 4 games in that period.

Sheff UTD may not be match sharp.

Although it's about the only 'bonus' if tomorrow gets binned. We will have a free week.

if it is off just let us know early tomorrow morning so we don't waste time and money travelling

From what I gather it’s largely an honour system and in house testing by clubs medical staff. I don’t think there’s any formal official process.

I may be wrong.

I found this on premier league site

Match postponement application process

Clubs are asked to contact the League as soon as they suspect that an application might need to be submitted.

The application should be made as far in advance of the match as possible, to provide clarity for fans and clubs, and to make sure the Board has all the necessary details to make a fully informed decision.

When making an application, clubs must provide the Board with the following details, together with clear reasons why they believe the match should be postponed:

- Players and staff who have returned a positive COVID-19 test, their vaccination status and, if known, the source of their infections
- Players and staff who are self-isolating
- Players who are unavailable to play through injury or illness
- Players listed on the club’s squad list who are still available to play in the match, including appropriately experienced Under-21 players (which includes Under-21 players who have played for the club, another Premier League or EFL club, or an overseas club in the current season)
- Supporting medical information to verify the status of each unavailable player, which will be reviewed by the League’s medical advisers

There is considerable dialogue between the club and the Premier League during the application process to establish the facts and fully assess the overall situation prior to any decision. This will include discussions between the club and League’s medical advisors, and if appropriate, the UK Health Security Agency.

Premier League Rules and factors taken into account by the Board

Premier League rules provide a framework and discretion to the Board to assess whether a postponement application should be accepted.

As the guidance shows, the Board will consider the following principal factors when making a decision:

1) The impact of COVID-19 infections on a club’s squad, as well as injuries, illness and those isolating, and the number of players available on the squad list and any Under-21 players with appropriate experience. Where a club cannot field 13 outfield players and a goalkeeper either from its squad list or its appropriately experienced Under-21 players, the match will be postponed.
2) The status of any COVID-19 outbreak within a club, including the number of individuals affected, the sequence and source of infections and their proximity to the match in question.
3) A club’s ability to safely prepare its players in the lead-up to a match.
4) Medical advice as to whether there is any unacceptable risk to the health and safety of players and staff by playing the match.
5) Any advice from UK Health Security Agency and other public bodies.
6) Any other exceptional circumstances.

The Board has applied these factors in recent postponements, with examples including:

- Where a club has been unable to field 13 outfield players and a goalkeeper for a match due to COVID-19 infections, injuries, illness and/or those isolating.
- Where the status of a COVID-19 outbreak within a club’s squad remains unclear very close to a match. For example, where there remains a concern that not all COVID-19 infections have been identified and there is insufficient time to resolve that concern before kick-off.
- Where the club does not have sufficient time to safely prepare its players in the lead up to a match. For example, where the UK Health Security Agency has requested the closure of a training ground and suspension of group training following an outbreak during the preparation period ahead of a match.

Now Sheff United game is off - I am less keen for us to play Blackpool tomorrow. The SU game is a 6 pointer.

I am in the camp that a rest is a benefit, not an hinderance.

In the EFL though.

What about the EFL?

In the 2020-21 season, the Professional Footballers' Association paid an estimated £5m bill for players to be tested across the English Football League. But up to this point in the 2021-22 season, there has been no mandatory requirement for clubs to test players.
The EFL had issued guidance in July around two 'green' and 'red' protocols. Clubs have been following 'green' protocols of daily screening for symptoms, with stricter 'red' protocols including testing only triggered by any local outbreaks, further restrictions imposed by the government - as has happened in recent days.
A decision to move to 'red' protocols would be made by the league in consultation with the clubs.
The EFL told BBC Sport on Tuesday that "conversations on Covid matters are ongoing".
In the meantime, fixtures are being affected in Championship, with QPR on Tuesday forced to postpone a second match in a matter of days amid a Covid outbreak at the club.

If we do play Blackpool , sheff Utd will want it on , with players rested for 2 weeks & ours on their 3rd game

Meanwhile, Blackpool boss Neil Critchley says they are having to cope with the loss of a number of players to injuries and suspensions. There is one positive case of Covid in their squad with further rounds of testing to be completed but the manager says they are right on the threshold of required numbers to play the game. FFS when did suspensions and injuries come into the equation.
Not that I still hold grudges after 25 years....

Have thought this was open to abuse and reading AFC Wimbledon's letter yesterday, could see the motivation and cause. Watching MoTD yesterday they mentioned as part of the commentary that Palace had tried to get their game with Spurs postponed, am no Palace expert but the side they fielded seemed pretty strong, notice they put out a side capable of winning today too. Maybe it's self isolating that allows more postponements than their could potentially be and that should be possible to avoid with strict bubble and testing protocols?

Wonder who will be doing the testing, the Club doctor or independent testers?
