bittersweet - Matt Vickers

I've got to say this is a big disappointment. Teesside does like doing this to itself. I was a little a concerned about Clarke only losing by 200 odd votes as well although he didn't have reform standing in his seat to split the vote so that is a bit more impressive.

Can't believe it. My MP.

What exactly did this d*ckhead do before entering politics? His website and everything else is extremely vague about it, I'm guessing car salesman or middle civil service management or something equally un-meritocratic and parasitic.
I'm a civil servant. You clearly don't have the first clue what we do or what our recruitment processes are.

What noble pursuit for the greater good do you do for a living?

I don't think the boundary changes helped but Labour have been losing support in Thornaby for a while. All the polls and MRPs had it as quite a comfortable Labour victory so something has happened. Maybe the suggestion he was a parachuted in candidate (despite being from round here originally) cut through more than expected. Some voting for Greens and LDs as well maybe where people thought it would be a comfortable Labour victory based on the polls.
Thornaby isn't included in Stockton west anymore is it? It's now in Andy McDonald's area as Middlesbrough and Thornaby west.

I think probably as they know Andy is a fairly safe labour seat so chuck Thornaby in with them and consolidate some Tory heartlands with the rest

Early life

edit
Vickers was born in University Hospital of North Tees to local business owners Hilary and Alexander Vickers.[4] [5] He grew up in Stockton-on-Tees and has three brothers.[6]He studied law and business management at Teesside University[7] and previously worked at Woolworths and Home Bargains including in a management role.[8][9][10]

Local political career

edit
Vickers stood for election in the Norton West ward on the Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council in 2007 and 2011 losing to Labour Party candidates Ann and d*ck Cains[11] and David and Norma Wilburn respectively.[12] In 2015 he stood for election in the Hartburn ward and became a councillor and leader of the Conservative group on the council from May 2015 until April 2021, when he stood down forcing a by-election.[13]

Between 2009 and 2019, he was the constituency agent for Richmond (Yorks). Vickers initially worked with William Hague. Following Hague’s retirement, Vickers helped to run Rishi Sunak's successful general election campaigns in 2015 and 2017.[14]

Vickers stood as the Conservative candidate for Cleveland Police and Crime Commissionerin 2016 losing to Barry Coppinger after the second preference votes were counted with a 37.9% vote share.[15][16]

After being elected as an MP in 2019 he faced criticism due to his ongoing representation as a councillor whilst an elected MP, being labelled as a "part time MP" by other councillors from the region.[17] In response to criticism, Vickers highlighted how he did not claim any expenses and donated all his councillor salary to three local charities, which helped veterans, those suffering with dementia and homelessness in the constituency.[18] At the time of his departure as a councillor, his allowance amounted to a minimum of £9,300 per year.[19][20] The only confirmed recipient of a donation is The Teesside Dementia Link Services who received a £500 donation from his councillor allowance.[21]

Makes the whole thing feel like a loss to me. Gutted. Just needed a few more racists, or a few less protest lib dem/green voters... Tory enablers 😢
Interesting to see that the rules have already changed. In 2019 it was Corbyn getting the Tory-enabler label for not doing enough to convince people to vote Labour. Strange that it's now the fault of those voting Green, Lib Dem etc.

No ownership. No responsibility. Looks like the adults are back in charge...

Because they changed the boundaries added tory villages and took away labour areas
Fair enough, It's just been interesting to read various threads explaining why Labour hadn't won in certain areas. Going from racists to uneducated & now to boundary limits.

Yeah I meant that they might have struggled anyway even without the boundary changes as Thornaby isn't the stronghold it once was

I never blamed Corbyn for anything, was a big supporter. I'd label myself a green supporter these days, I'd have voted green if our electoral system allowed me to do it guilt free.

I completely agree the adults are back in charge, and I'm very pleased to see it. I'm just sulking about having to put up with 4-5 more years of Vickers smirking face. I'll get over it 👍

Take comfort in the fact that he and his mates will have a marginally bigger say than the LDs now.

Sadly far too many people in IB feel they are the new Yarm, Hurworth toffs. They have a nice car and a nice house and feel they are doing ok so why change. Very few actually said they would vote Tory but if you are undecided with 48 hours to go - many said they were, the reality is you are going Tory but too embarrassed to say. Very little boards / posters for Vickers but a deep rooted ‘we are part of the Tory fold now’ so don’t look back or tell people where you came from - Thornaby or Middlesbrough! Places like Fairfield , Hurworth and MSG where along with IB the Councillor’s are predominately Tory made it difficult but with 21,000 voters on IB it was the I’m alright jacks’ and the new plastic Tories who don’t realise they will never actually be accepted into the real Tory party circuit who done for Joe Dancey. Vickers hardly run any campaign at all whilst Dancey threw the kitchen sink at it yet he still lost. After spending over 70 hours door knocking in addition to leafleting I simply can’t bare to go out into Ingleby tonight for a walk or a beer as I will look at folk and think what have you done? Had lunch today in Billingham and off for a beer to Norton.

I'm in Stockton West (formally Stockton South). I didn't even know Reform had a candidate running until the ballot paper. The only leaflets I received were from Labour, the only visit I received was from Labour. 4 in our household voted Labour. I'm really disappointed. One candidate had no party logo next to his name it was blank, not sure who/what he represented ??

Sorry mate, rude of me - didn’t mean to cause offence, apologies.
No worries.

an overreaction from me anyway. But we've had so much **** thrown at us from the likes of the daily fail and tory ministers it's a sensitive subject 😂

Trust me most civil servants hate the tories. It takes a superhuman effort to remain impartial at work, but I'd say 99% manage it. Despite, particularly in recent years, batshit crazy ministers.

Can't wait to work for Labour ministers. Some will still be nobs I'm sure (and to be fair some tories were actually OK. Again, less so in more recent years). But at least it'll be delivering stuff we're more likely to believe in.

People in that area clearly have more money than intelligence quotient points.

Quite sad when some decent tories like Robert Buckland lost their seats and sh it ones like Braverman, Hunt and Vickers survive. Even worse that Vickers constituency is part of one of the most deprived areas of the UK. Absolutely sickens me.
