Bettenelli to Chelsea

I don't care what size club it is, 3rd choice keeper is pretty much a nothing position. As others have said, you're really there to help with training and a last resort to cover injuries. Although fair chance they'd look to make an emergency signing/loan if it looked like their 1 and 2 were going to be out for any reasonable length of time.

Same as Turnbull, Brad Jones, Andy Lonergan etc. Not that surprising a signing, he's not there to play.

Based on last season he's highly unlikely to get a regular game at anything above league 1 level. So why not go and be well looked after, enjoy first class training facilities and get well paid for a few years.

I was asking how much the deal was worth?

I picked £11m because we had a forward who could not score at all for us just went for that fee.

It's as bizzare as Brad Jones going to Liverpool😂.

The lad will probably double his wages and get most Saturdays off as 3rd choice. I guess he could play in the league Cup.

It's easy money. He basically gets used for shootinh and crossing practice in training.

It’s a difficult one. Do you want to play in the Championship or do you want to guarantee an income that will keep you comfortable for the rest of your life? Lots would say they’d prefer to play, lots would take the money. It depends on Bettinelli I suppose - is it a job or is it a vocation?
That was the decision Ross Turnbull faced. He had just had a little kid so it was an opportunity to support his family - security - but at the same time Ross had next to no first team experience and that counted against him in the long run. For Bettinelli - he has had a career - he seems to be on the decline now so can't blame him at all.

You make them sound like apprentice street cleaners. After 2 years they both had enough money for life. Get a grip.

I was surprised when Ross Turnbull opted for Chelsea - put it was security for life. And I guess maybe he thought it was possible he might get the no.1 shirt by seizing his chance when an opportunity came around. Got to be a really good move for Bettinelli though, surely.

I agree but not let's not think these are normal salaries. You are talking fortunes, good luck to them. But they don't stop living at 35. They could become delivery drivers.

Bettenelli did not have a good season with us, but a player's form does not always go in a straight line does it. Look at Dimi he did a good job for us in the Championship at the end of his career, but why was he not playing at that level earlier in his career. At 31 when he should have been at his peak - he was third choice keeper at Championship, Coventry.
Bettenelli I believe has been in the England squad and and shown signs he can be a good keeper.

He has been bought as a third choice and may even be loaned out so half of his salary could easily be paid by another club.

He is only 29 so hardly at the end of a career as a keeper, he's only a little over half way through it.

I don’t blame him one iota, though it implies a lack of playing ambition on his part. I guess it is a sign of these pandemic times. I doubt any club outside of SW6 were banging his agents doors down with the sort of money Chelsea might be paying him. I suspect it is a lot less than people think mind. He is a London lad which means not uprooting family too. He will rightly be putting the financial security of his family first. Good luck to the lad anyway. As poor as he was at times, and at times shockingly so, he did make some very good saves too in fairness.
