Best away support in the Championship?

With us taking another massive following on Saturday, It got me thinking. Does anyone have the stats for the best away support in the Championship? Had a look to see if there was some sort of table but can't seem to find one.

All those have the majority of games within a relatively short distance. We probably travel 2 or 3 times the miles they do following the Boro.

Its a difficult thing to gauge as location is such a big factor. Its easy to havd a large away following if you have 5 or 6 clubs within 60 miles.

The way I look at it is there is no club in this division bring as many supporters to The Riverside as we do in the reverse fixture. Not even close so by that measure we have the best away support bar none.

If you look at the table provided above, Forest have the largest away support however, they usually struggle to bring 2,000 supporters to The Riverside and I cant ever remember them filling our away end. Given the opportunity we would comfortably sell 3,000 to 4,000 at their ground.

I think i read somewhere earlier in the season that we had something like x2 or x3 of the distance that Coventry have to travel this season (figures may not be exact because it was a few months ago), it is unbelievable how well supported we are away given some of the distances we have to travel even for early ko's and night games.

This is from September.

As I said, the graphic above is from September after GW8.

At that point we'd only played 4 away games.

- Fulham away on the first day, early kick off and live on Sky.
- Derby on a Saturday.
- Coventry on a Saturday.
- Nottingham Forest on a Wednesday night.

Our overall position might not be much different, but the actual numbers involved in the will be completely different when you add in the other 19 away matches for each team.

For some reason that account stopped releasing the figures though.

We charge £30+, not very easy to get to, not a tourist destination etc. If other teams away fans are going to miss one then it makes sense that it would be ours. It's not an attractive proposition.

Yeah, it's Sheff Utd, Boro and Forest when I was tracking it .. but kinda gave up the last couple of months .. but with the difference so small .. a good 6k at Preston might swing it our way!

Is it just me that finds Fulhams stats shameful.

They think they're a big club because they fill out their tiny ground. But surely if there were loads of fans wanting to go, and based in London with great rail networks, and in arguably their best ever season, they should have a massive away following.....instead 17th

I think it is absolutely indisputable that we have the best away crowd in the second tier and better than many in the top flight.
Factor in the miles travelled and it is further endorsed.

The stripes up the road are both in the same boat too.

I would say our average is now over 2,000

Wasn't there nearly 6,000 @ Barnsley 3,700, @ Peterboro and Blackpool

Other sell outs @ Huddersfield, Hull, Preston, Millwall, Bournemouth.

2,200 @ Bristol which is a 580 mile round trip

Just checking now.
Sheffield United have played all 23 away games now, they took around 1,500 to Bristol City and around 2,000 for QPR.

So their season average would be around 2,233.

We sold out for Bournemouth, which was 1,400, but only managed around 700 for Swansea, add the 5,649 minimum at Preston and our season average is around 2,174.

So Sheffield United still average more than us, sadly I think the huge issues with ticketing at Swansea set back the average significantly, but we'd still have averaged 3 less fans even if we'd been given more than 3 days to buy tickets and sold out the full allocation.

Since GW39, Forest have had 4 away games and sold out for their last away match, so add 1,032, 3,700, 1,800, 1,300 and 3,634 to their total.

Making Forest's average for the season 2,208.

So it's as you were on both fronts.

1. Sheffield United : 2,233
2. Nottingham Forest: 2,208
3. Middlesbrough: 2,174
4. West Brom: 2,083

We'd had the third best away support in the Championship this season in pure numerical terms, which is brilliant.
Probably would have been second if Swansea hadn't ****ed over on ticketing.
