Bernard Gent RIP

It was called The Shuffle also by Van McCoy. Got to No 4 in UK charts
It was the song I heard going down the steps of the Chicken Run and out into Clive Road.
Those were great days. Thanks Bernard

He played the Shuffle yes, but the whistly song that people have been looking for for decades was a different tune (from a 1970's french car ad). As mentioned he often played it after a defeat.

After defeats......
Thats probably why l don't remember it as much a the Shuffle

Does anyone know anything about the man? As said such an iconic part of our history. I assume being the tannoy announcer wasn't his full time job (may be wrong) so what did he do for a profession? How did he end up getting the Ayresome gig? Do people remember when he started?

On youtube Funky my video I put together a good few years back "Demolition of Ayresome Park"

1.05 minutes, BG is there sat in his seat in the north stand, saying his famous quote to the AP faithful through his mic

That video is both awesome and incredibly sad. Loved Ayresome.

This is really sad news. He had such a distinctive voice, and this evokes so many AP memories.
I hope there is some tribute to him at the West Brom game in less than three weeks time.

Oh that is such sad news. His was the voice of Ayresome Park.
He was also in his time the voice of local speedway and cricket.
Lovely guy was always extremely warm and supportive. He would praise some of the fmttm writers who he said he loved to read. Can you imagine what a compliment that was for them.
Bernard was in charge of the press for the 1966 World Cup in Middlesbrough so he also made his mark internationally.
RIP

In the 60's he also wrote match reports for the evening Gazette, not sure if he stood in for Cliff Mitchell, or they worked alternative Boro games until Cliff took over permanently

Worked as a journo on the Northern Echo

Sad news, as much of a legend as any player - as he was one of us too, a fan. Just like Ali' Brownlee at the Riverside, in my head when I think of Ayresome Park & Boro I hear Bernards voice in my recollection.. along with smell of cigars & bovril... plus Power Game & the Hustle...

Wow, fantastic to hear his voice again. I also didn't realise the first and last Boro managers at Ayresome Park were called Robson (obviously knew about the first one).

As others have said, "Its part of my childhood that has gone with the sad passing of Bernard Gent". He will always be Mr Ayresome Park. I still occasionally try out that whistly tune when leaving the Riverside. I had a few others whistling it after one match after they heard me. Proper smiling as we left the game. RIP Bernard x
