Bercow defects to Labour - Did not see that coming

And that is all that you can bring to the discussion?

Nothing about his act of leaving the Tory party and his reasons for doing so?

You appear quite engaged in other political discussions.
His reasons are his own, if he'd went from left to right would you be so understanding.

The point being that Bercow has grown up a life-long Conservative and if you read his recent auto-biography [Hard Copy`s are available on ebay and amazon] you will understand the significant slide-shift - for him this is a landmark change of seismic proportions.
Whether it is a comment on the right - shift in British politics is open to debate.
It will be interesting to see when the political ground moves leftwards - whether John Bercow rues his change of allegiance?

Well done John, if this is really true that is. Makes a few on here eat their words which is a shame, but hey it has to be a positive for Labour and their move to claim centrists like me. Anyone on the left cringing then you are a sad bunch, if true that is 😉

Too early to say but politics is cyclical, I'm sure labour will come back, but can't see them winning the next election, maybe the one after, people will be sick of the Tories by then. It won't be with starmer though.

I really don’t get this partisan approach to politics. Never have. This isn’t a criticism of you coluka, it’s a criticism of the people who think in the way you describe. I really do like Bercow and what he stands for. Decency is in short supply.

I'm not Coluka, remember his name fromrom when I was posting here before on the old board. As for partisan approach, this board is rife with it, labour good Tories bad regardless.

I absolutely agree, it's all about policy for me. i don't want extremism at either end of the spectrum. I want pragmatism, I want government that is representative of our whole electorate, and if that means working to a common ground because we are 30% left-30% right- 30% centrist, then sensible middle ground politics is the way to go. It's why I want PR and multiple parties to force the parties to work together on a middle ground rather than the country swaying one way then the other. This would force parties to create individual coalitions and deals to back each other on the most important policies to them.

If you think that then you haven’t been reading the board properly.

Couldn’t agree more. I find myself with views that could be construed left wing, right and centrist. Nobody fits easily into a box. Absolutes are for idiots.

Loved this quote about the theories disadvantage 😂

“I think what it [the byelection result] tells us is that there is very considerable distrust on the part of voters in the south of England of this government. I don’t accept the thesis that this was just an anti-HS2 vote. I think that is very convenient for the government, but it suffers from the disadvantage of being wrong. I think people in very large numbers are disappointed, in some cases disgusted, by what this government has done.”

Ah right so you have got a problem with it.

Why didn't you just say that instead of taking a cheap shot at his relationship?
I have no problems with anyone's political preferences, clearly some on here do if it's the " wrong one", didn't take a cheap shot at their marriage or I'd have mentioned her affair with his cousin. I have no doubt if I mentioned something insulting or derogatory about Boris or pretti Patel I'd have had numerous likes.

That’s likely because it goes to their character. If you criticised Patel’s penchant for bullying or Johnson’s inability to be faithful they would be legitimate attacks on the character of elected politicians. Surely you can see that?

Yes I can, but if I said something cheap it would go own just as well with some on here, surely you can see that. One poster on here has referred to this govt as a hard right coup, they won by a landslide FFS!!. 😀😀

But that’s not the equivalent. I would tend to agree. The election was won on the back of Brexit criminality, corruption and lies that commenced in 2016 and which continues at pace with very clear tactics that have similar characteristics as those employed during a coup. That’s just an opinion and not an ad hominem attack on, for example, someone’s spouse. The former is legitimate, the latter not.

You’re engaging in whataboutery to defend a position. If you think cheaply attacking a politicians spouse is wrong it is not a defence to argue that others would like it if you did it in relation to the opposite ‘side’. I happen to disagree with you anyway. If you posted anything derogatory and personal about, for example, Patel’s husband, I do not think anyone would feel any differently about it than they would if it were Bercow’s wife.

, my first post was a throwaway comment from an interview she gave, your ridiculous comparison to a coupe are just that. Don't forget project fear .

Here we go. Firstly, I wasn’t talking about your specific Bercow comment on this thread as ought to be obvious from my responses. Mine was a general point in response to your assertion that ad hominem attacks on the spouses of Conservative MPs would be welcome on this board. I don’t agree and have explained why.

Secondly, where did I compare your comment to a coup? Please point it out because I can’t see it.

Project Fear is coming true in front of your very eyes. So I don’t really see your point there either.

As usual, when a person runs out of legitimate arguments they start inventing straw men.

I was referring to your comment, not you referring to mine regarding a coup, read it back. And project fear " coming true " is just your opinion, semantics are not my thing,

I’ve read it back. You’ve not offered anything. My response stands.

A coup d’état essentially means a change of government through illegal means or by force. The comparison is a valid one (if exaggerated for effect) because this government came to power largely on the back of the illegally won referendum, the ongoing lies etc. It continues to act illegally whether it be through the illegal prorogation of Parliament or breaking international law in a limited and specific way. It isn’t all that ridiculous.

And Project Fear coming true isn’t an opinion I’m afraid. It’s supported by the facts.
