BBC4 effectively shut down

BBC is in a no win situation really.. When it was less popular than ITV it was ordered by the leader of the day that it had to target mass audiences to justify its funding, so along came Eastenders and further down the line 'Celebrity .... '.

Then a few years ago it was told it was driving private sector innovation out so it had to start outsourcing programme making, same with its website dominating too much (see recipes on BBC Food vs celebrity chefs whinging they were struggling to sell over priced cookbooks)

Lately it has been told to focus on core audience - got rid of BBC3 - to keep BBC4, now it is being told it needs to try and get younger viewers back so switch BBC4 for BBC3 again.

Whatever it does some people will support no matter what and other people will attack it, no matter what.

It is like all big issues, there are extremes on both sides who it seems make all the noise and everybody else then gets dragged along.

Also the BBC sells enormous amounts of it’s programmes overseas.
BBC Worldwide:
Financial results

Cash returns of £210.5m to BBC (2015/16: £222.2m), a record excluding disposal proceeds, and equivalent to 12.2% of BBC spend on television content
Headline sales up 3.0% at £1,059.9m (2015/16: £1,029.4m)
Headline profit up 17.6% at £157.3m (2015/16: £133.8m)
Free cash generation up 138.3% at £90.8m (2015/16: £38.1m)
Trashing BBC 4
It’s not economics...it’s politics.

Glad I don’t have a licence and not likely ever to have one again.
I recently got rid of mine too.

Simple fact of the matter is that more and more people are using streaming services to watch tv instead of traditionally sitting down and watching a TV program when it's scheduled.

Stuff that is shown on terrestrial TV that I want to watch can easily be found online even just a few hours after its aired at its scheduled time.

Could save a few bob on binning programs like Strictly Come Dancing and paying mega money to these has been celebs. Yes I know it popular bur does not justify the money spent on it.

Get rid of all the celebs who just turn up on radio 2 for a last big payday. Graham Norton, Paul O'Grady, Vanessa Phelps, Jonathan Ross to name but a few over the last few years.

Stop having three news personnel for every story. The last two just repeating what the first one said. Or the overseas ones who report without being in the same country as the news they are reporting.
I keep saying to my wife as it’s proved so popular why don’t they just bring back ”Come Dancing” then we can watch talented people doing it.

There was a reason BBC3 was take off air. Mainly because it targeted a younger demographic , and they just do not watch TV anymore.
I'm sure there are many youtubers that have more viewers than BBC3 managed
Apart from that BBC3 is complete and utter 5HIT.

BBC4 is the best channel by light years.

BBC1 is turning into a clone of ITV1 with its increasing obsession for attracting viewers by broadcasting ever more banal and moronic crap, especially on a Saturday.

If anyone would care to set up a new channel which shows quality programmes for people who avoid game shows, reality shows, cookery shows, baking shows, anything with “celebrity” in its title, anything with “The Great British...” in the title and soap operas and isn’t obsessed with the usual bores like Alan Carr, Ant and Dec, the omnipresent Mary bloody Berry, Schofield, Willoughby, that cockney t*t on “The Wawwww” etc. They will get my subscription.

and so we have the continued trawl to do down and undermine the BBC - all part of the right wing agenda.

they see it as doo gooders, multi-cultural and a left wing mouth piece.

anyone whose not in the all white cabal, knows different.

gary lineker, zoe ball and lenny henry - usually take the flak.

the use of the word 'sad' needs to go on the naughty step ! - crocodile tears and disingenuous.

Radio 4, 5 & 6 is worth the licence money alone.

So anyone who criticises the BBC’s increasingly poor television offer must be “right wing” ?

Are people aware of the BBC Worlwide Ltd. A for profit arm of the BBC that exists to make profit by selling its output to foreign TV stations. Id love to own a business where the development costs are paid by the taxpayer and I reap the rewards of the profit. As would anyone else.

It’s quite bizarre, really: BBC3 is a terrestrial tv channel funded by the licence....but specifically aimed at a group which neither tends to watch terrestrial tv nor pays for a licence.......

Meanwhile BBC4 which is aimed at a group which tends to watch terrestrial tv and pays for a licence, even when over 75 and having paid a licence probably for 50 years, gets downgraded to a repeats channel.

Interesting philosophy.

BBC4 best part of BBC TV certainly its original programming- sad if it is effectively going. I suppose they need the cash to pay GL's wages and a lot of other highly paid BBC TV employees and managers. I read over 150 BBC managers used go to Glastonbury as part of their job. I like the BBC, but there is some flab there and its still over London based, with well resources facilities in the Capital and BBC Radio Tees surviving on 30 year old equipment and counting every penny.

The BBC owns it so the 'profits' subsidise the licence fee income. No 'one' reaps the profits

BBC 3 is responsible for bringing that God awful Stacey dooley to our screens. Plus other youth oriented ***** like the rap game. Utter garbage
I have to say I find there often interesting things to watch on sky arts a great addition to freeview
