Barlaser not being used yesterday

I fully expected Barlaser to come on in the second half yesterday with us struggling to break WBA down.

Howson and Hackney couldn’t pick out a forward pass for love nor money, isn’t that what Barlaser was brought in to do?

Most assists in the league, he got one last week when we were once again struggling to break a team down and yet doesn’t come on.

Yep, that was my feeling too, but I just think we were generally a little below par from 1-11.
The goals killed us. More surprised at Fry not starting, to be honest.

100%. Howson doesn't really take risks do there was no forward passes. He had loads of opportunities to put the ball in the box from where Barlaser got his assist last week and played a safe ball instead. You will lose the ball regularly but if you're 2 goals down you have to take risks to try something.

Howson and Hackney together have been great and part of teams which have come from behind to win this season. Their partnership has been excellent since Carrick came in.
The quality of ball coming in from the usual sources just wasn't good yesterday and West Brom were very well organised, ultra conservative and extremely disciplined. They played our front 4 really well.

Which is exactly why Barlaser should have been used yesterday, no one is questioning how good Howson and Hackney have been this season.

I think Barlaser will be in now. We needed him yesterday and i have no idea why he wasn't brought on.

I thought Howson and Hackney did well over all and gave us an advanatage over WBA in central midfield, but agree about there was limited attacking threat from them.

Bringing on Ramsay and Jones was questioned a bit by our fans, but I felt the way the score against WBA was crosses from the by line. They had the central defensive line very organised and times it was a wall of blue and white.

Attacking wise I felt we need to take risks with early balls and we didn't, so allowing WBA to fully organise. Also the qulaity of crossing could have been a touch better.

Cant agree with this at all, in fact I'm a bit open jawed at this comment.

The bigger problem yesterday was the forward players, especially McGree and Akpom, who we rely on hugekly to create spaces and open teams up.

Both were deliberately crowded out by WBA - Howson and Hackney were the reason why we didn't create yesterday.

There’ll be a reason why carrick never used him, so I’m happy to keep faith in his plans as I think it’s now about risk and reward.

We’d lost yesterday ( and we all knew it) before we’d really began so why risk him when other more viable options are coming up.

Possibly because his stats do not mark him out as a strong tackler. Not really his game. It was a really combative midfield minefield. I thought he might have not had the room to pick his passes or the targets to hit. Could that have been why he wasn't used?

I agree it’s Horses for courses rob as you say plus as I said risk and reward.

It’s a balancing act.

Eh, what’s so jaw dropping about saying Howson and Hackney couldn’t pick out a forward pass yesterday? Or at least a defence splitting pass.

I presume you meant that they were NOT the reason why we didn’t create?
If so I agree in the main. Akpom, McGree, Forss and Archer were well controlled. Giles and Smith did not cross well.
West Brom defended a gift lead really well.
We had 70% possession which shows our CM had plenty of the ball and played their normal game.

I would agree with everything you and Jonny Ingbar say on the subject.
The four players you mention were not at the races today due mainly to WBA sitting deep after getting two goal lead and crowding them out. Archer especially looked like a lost child today and our lack of striking options on the bench is a worry.

Made easier because they were 2 nil up would of been a different game had it been 0-0

Agree with all of that, we didn't get behind them and open them on once.

There was plenty of intent from both and plenty of passes into the forwards, but it was happening in front of them.

Neither was the reason why we didn't create yesterday

Giles’s final ball into the box was poor yesterday and Archer had a quiet game, thought Crooks should have been introduced earlier.

The game reminded me of a certain play off final at Wembley. Norwich going 2-0 up early doors and then nullifying us the rest of the game.

Hope it is not a portent of things to come.

Apparently absolutely anyone with any sort of association with Newcastle United was in the fountains at Trafalgar Sq. Quite possibly that's where he was yesterday.
