Barca the end of an era

Said for years without Messi they wouldnt even be a top 4 side, just shows how good he actually is to drag such a poor side so far over the last few years

I thought we had it bad, but going from Messi, Neymar and Suarez to Braithwaite and luuk de jong up is certainly some slide

Sadly just another big club who thought they were invincible, expect we will see more of this over the next few years. Get the feeling the football bubble could be about to burst for some

Always sad to see an institution fail and hard to see them recovering any time soon with the level of debt they carry.
Sits at 1.6 Billion Euros now. How on earth do you service that!?
A big lump of that sits in Messi's bank account.
Players wages currently stand at 95% of income.

Barca have been on the slide for a good few years. They totally lost direction and wasted a horrific amount of money on poor transfer business and high salaries. At their peak they had numerous players they'd devveloped themsleves, it felt like a lazy change of direction when they stopped going down that route.
Unfortuntely for them they won't get bailed out with dodgy backhanders like Real do.

Nothing to do with any player, its the ones who are sanctioning the transfers that are the problem

It goes to show that sport is always a cycle. That’s what’s so good about it. I mean PSG didn’t win their league last season!

Most Spanish clubs are a basket case financially, I think Barca and Real Madrid are often bailed out by their governments because of the size of the institutions that they are - until the governments ran out of money due to the extraordinary pandemic.

For me, that’s crippled them as much as Coutinho, Dembele and Griezmann were disastrous, incredibly expensive signings, plus rubbish in the boardroom, plus totally unsustainable wage bills for years, which they’d still have got away with if it wasn’t for COVID.

A couple of years and they’ll be back at it. Their academy will still have the pick of the world’s best players and it’s Barcelona, managers and players will still walk over broken glass to play there.

That is exactly the problem in modern day football. The players should receive good salaries, but it's crazy how despite billions being generated in European football, it's really only the players and their agents who have really seen the benefit. World football should have introduced a cap on salaries once the TV money started pouring in. Tickets for fans should have been kept cheap and the "product" would have continued being good without crippling many clubs.

😁Messi got half a Billion Euros over 4 years and that has nothing to do with their dire financial position 😁

I don't begrudge him of it, no way. He deserves/ is worth it, he's self-made, and the best at something which the most people try and do (his competition is massive), and when they (his competition) fail they pay to watch him do it.

Factor in half of his wages have probably gone on tax, tax on shirt sales and tax on tickets etc, he's probably helped fund and subsidise more poor people lives than over 99.999999% of people on the planet. If people were not buying tickets, paying for sky TV etc, they wouldn't be paying it as tax to fund the poor. The money could be better distributed between the club though.

How much did he make for them by dragging them to winning leagues/cups every year? And thats before you even take into account the money he will have made the brand

Agents fees should be capped at 10k, or 1% or whatever, but no incentives to move players on repeatedly, so like one fee per player, per 5 years or something. Or make all players be represented by a charity or something like that. Undermining clubs, sniffing round players and dodgy deals shouldn't be a lucrative business.

Definitely could do with a salary cap too, so that all associated with the club get a decent wage, but clearly the playing squad should still be getting 70%, but how that's divvy'd up needs to be looked at.

The problem is you could end up like the NFL with some dude on 25m, and some other guy on 250k, playing on the same team, which is a 100x multiplier. 10x multiplier should be the absolute max.

He was also free, no transfers etc.

Ronaldo's already paid his wages and transfer fee back to united (or they;ve recouped it) and he's only been there a couple of months.

No, sorry i can't get away with the likes of Messi's wages, plus the crocodile tears at the split with Barca! If you're that concerned, help bail them out!🙃🙈🤬

Yeah strange how he went after Messi and not griezmann, Dembele etc. I get some people dislike him but he really isnt the reason for Barcelona's problems. They wouldnt even be playing in Europe this season if it wasnt for Messi

They owe over one billion, what exactly can Messi or any other player do to help them out? And also why should they? Its not the players fault they are in this mess

I wonder if they will go back to how they were in the 60s 70s and 80s only won 2 la ligas and not a lot else. It is going to be very difficult for them at least in the short term to compete with Rich clubs and the premier league or even Real Madrid they reduced their spending a few years ago so in nowhere near as bad position as Barca. Barca are a brand these days and Messi was massive part of that but they ended up paying him far too much especially as his powere started to wane. Back when i started to watch football in the late 70s and 80s Barcalona were a bunch of thugs who definitely didn't play the beautiful game.
