Bamford starts for England

Selling Bamford and keeping Gestede, Fletcher and Assombalonga (there had been interest in Rudy and Britt at the time) was just a ridiculous decision. He was better than the three of them combined. We potentially had a 20 goal a season man on the books but he wasn't given regular game time. He only got into the team under Pulis when Rudy got injured if I remember rightly and then he went on to start scoring regularly. He definitely wasn't his first choice. I remember him spouting some nonsense about his privileged upbringing one time and wondered if it was a personal thing. But then again it was probably just the fact he preferred a big 6ft3 donkey up front rather than someone with bags of ability.

Much that I like Bamford I wouldnt be surprised if that turns out to be his one and only cap.

Ings surely should be included in the next squad with DCL.

Well he didn't have a good game but its just 60 minutes. I do think he is a bit below the other options England have.

Agreed. he will be very disappointed he didn’t make much impact against that kind of opposition. The whole team for the first 70 minutes were all over the place. To have had one shot on target with 83% possession going into the last 20 minutes was telling.

Was a good player for us. Wrongly sold. I wish the lad well, I like the way he carries himself. Just seems a good steady pro. I’d have him back in a heartbeat.

I wonder if Burnley, Norwich and Palace think they should have played him more???
I imagine in hindsite he will feel that he should have gone back to Boro for another year.

He went from champo player of the season and playoff final to not even bench warmer at 3 clubs. I presume we tried to get him back? He could have been part of a promotion winning side and no doubt been with us in the prem.

He effectively wasted 2-3 years on 3 loans where he never played.

Oh and Lingard is wasted at UTD. I can't believe he didn't get a move to play regular football. I imagine he will have a few suiters when he's available on a free next summer.

Greenwood, Ings, Wilson, Watkins should all be ahead of Bamford in the pecking order for England.

Kane & DCL should be certs when fit.

I like Bamford, but he's not as good as those mentioned above.

I did feel sorry for him last night mind. They took him off at the same time putting Mount & Grealish on.

No wonder we scored a few after that. Those two are our creative force behind the striker. and I'm pretty sure Bamford would've had 1 or 2 more chances if he was on the pitch with Mount & Grealish.

He was woeful
No he did OK, he was making the runs behind the defence and that lifted ball to (was it) an offside Lingard was a highlight. Sadly his runs went unnoticed, it's not as if he missed chance after chance we didn't make him a chance to miss. There was the one that he couldn't reach at the far post but but a clear cut chance. It would have been interesting to see him play with Mount and Grealish on the pitch.

What exactly is it with this elevation of "DCL"?
I'd rather have Bamford any day of the week - technically a much better footballer. And scored more goals last season too.
Why is Watkins seen as better? and Greenwood has done nowt at all yet. Wilson is a good PL poacher, but a mile off international class.
I agree Ings is worth including/having a look at.

It seems a few were hoping for Bamford to have a quiet/disappointing debut to back up their prejudices about him. (That part not aimed at you Marv btw)
I hope he scores loads again this season, leads the line like he does and gets more international opportunities; he has the class to cut through.

I don't know about that like, Greenwood has scored over 30 goals for Man United, yes over the course of a couple seasons, but at the age of 19 and mainly from the bench rather than starting every game. Including 3 from 3 so far this season.

Greenwood is the future, Bamford is not.

Greenwood got 7 in 31 league appearance last season and 12 in 52 overall. He's just emerged from a massive barren spell. I don't see him playing much for United now Ronaldo is there. He may end up getting a bit of time out wide, but not an England centre forward.

I think he was a bit headless chicken in the box, he kept moving into traffic rather than finding space and if anything, he was trying to hard.
He also had a glorious chance but when you need a bit of coolness & calm he seemed rushed, didn't get a great connection & ballooned it.

I hope he gets another chance but if he does it won't be because of what he did on the pitch yesterday.

Yep, although he got championship player of the year and was brilliant for us, I think he was still a bit lightweight and maybe a reason he didn't get more game time at those clubs who really wanted a forward to lead the line on their own.

His touch, movement and finishing was class that play-off final year, but not the best at holding the ball up and I'd say he benefitted from having Vossen almost playing as 2 up front with him.

Ironically under Pulis he proved he could hold the ball up, I think it's something he'd improved on since his first spell. Not sure if he'd bulked up a bit? His all round game was much better second time round and appears to have improved further under Bielsa.

Hope Bamford isn't the whipping boy, but probably will be, because that's the story of his career. The whole team looked like they didn't know each other until they brought on Mount, Grealish and Kane. Bamford made runs again and again - Ian Wright mentioned it - he was looking to run behind, but no one played the balls. He's still up there and deserves chances. Hopefully he keeps playing in qualifying. Not sure Southgate's system suits him though.
