Australia free trade deal a failure for UK

Certainly a poorly negotiated deal by the UK civil service, Does not surprise me, we the UK tax payers and NHS got a poor deal when the the PFI contracts were negotiated too and are paying a high financial price now, same with past privatisations.

There still seems to pride in the UK Civil Service in been good amatuers and for things to look and sound right. Being a tough commercial negotiator is probably not at the top of the scale espeically if it conflicts with political appearence and pressures.

Top marks on misrepresenting the duties of political figures and the Civil Service. Top doylery.

As Eustice said; most of this goes down to Liz Truss needing to get a quick deal for the sake of it.

I'm sure I mentioned brexiteers deflecting! 😔

A lot of the best civil servants were jettisoned because they weren't Brexit enthusiasts. A lot of our best trade negotiators were negotiators for the EU and stayed there or retired. They certainly weren't professionally crazy enough to work with the stupid people who were intending to implement their Brexit, something they advocated without even a rudimentary understanding of what it would actually mean.

That's what is going to happen.
As usual with politics you're being deliberately obtuse.
Why care about farmers? They voted brexit, this is what it meant.

To be quite frank, the ability for us to import cheaper food and products into the UK market is about the only benefit of brexit, not that we have bothered to pursue it.

Also Eustice is just trying to shore up his rural vote, not sure why his comments are being taken as gospel no that they are agreeable to current trendy opinion.

I think the split with Farmers was that the older retired or semi retired mostly voted for Brexit, the younger ones doing most of the work and more invested in the future did not.

The NFU did a survey of its members in early 2016 which had 52% in favour of Remain, 26% Leave and 22% undecided.

Should be thrown out of office for his first line here.

Mr Eustice told the Commons that now he is on the backbenches he "no longer has to put such a positive gloss on what was agreed".

Overall the UK "gave away far too much for far too little in return", he told MPs.

Sorry am I reading that correctly? You are blaming the Civil Service? - as opposed to the Government who signed the deal off and at the time hailed it as a success including a few in here I recall.

As I said in my first post. It's exhausting. Brexiters will defend their failed, catastrophic ideal with anything. They'll chose anything to deflect from how bad it is.

I don't know what brings them to do this. Deep down, even they know how bad it has made the country. They can't not. And yes, it's embarrrasing to have to admit you've been conned. I would have thought it's more embarrassing to go along with the con when everyone knows it was all a lie. I don't know what must be done to educate these people.

Even more embarrassing than being conned into voting Conservative at the last general election ? 🤫 I mean it's not as if you didn't know what the party stood for after being in power for so long....Get Brexit Dun👍

Strange I never heard Truss mention the Civil Service when announcing the fabulous trade deal. It was all about her.

I've never voted Tory, so I'll call out that people are struggling to break free of their entrenched mindset, because that means admitting they've been conned

Why does he have to change the record? It isn't your place to control other peoples speech on here
FFS its an idiom of speech for somebody repeating something ad nauseam and this particular fact is trotted out so much now its not funny and its boring. He's admitted his mistake. Far from me wanting to control anybody's comments on here but that doesn't mean I will not challenge what is said.

ah, misunderstood, yes trotting out the line about SmallTowns previous voting doesn't mean SmallTown cannot have their say today.
