Attacking the South Stand ..

.. In the first half ..

I don't understand it.

Every other team attacks their main body of support in the second half .. except Boro.

Yes, ok - in the early days of the Riverside ... the North stand was the "New Holgate" .. but it's not now ..

There was a game or two under Wilder (can't remember if this or last season) - where we came out and set up with the intention of attacking the North first half and the South second (was before the coin toss - we came out with that intention) .. and then it flipped back to normal after those couple of games.

I’m not sure about it being ‘the early days’. I think it’s only been about 10 years RF have been on the south stand. I’m assuming we’ve been kicking towards the north in the second half for the other 15 or so.

Last time the opposition won the toss and forced us to switch there was a huge cheer from the South.

Is it to do with keeping the opposition the furthest distance from their fans when defending in the second half?
Given the oppos rarely bring more than 1000 - I can't see that being a big reason as I can't see it make that much difference .. Seems to me like it's a case of " .. this is what we've done since being at the Riverside" and nobody wants to take the decision to change it .. thing is .. even when we come out of the tunnel we're on the South Stand side of the pitch and then swap when the players have done lining up

I thought it depended on who won the toss? Or am I thirty years out of date on that? If you won the toss you chose which end (with the wind, against the wind, sun in the goalies eyes or not in the goalies eyes…etc), if you lost the toss you kicked off…??

Nah .. this is BEFORE the toss .. the toss generally just determines Kick Off and " .. we'll just stick to the ends we're at now" .. teams generally only switch ends for some reason to give them an advantage .. ie, the wind is blowing strongly in one direction and they'd like to take advantage of it in the first / second half.

No, when we come out the tunnel .. before the coin toss .. we always go to the end of the pitch that indicates we're happy attacking the South Stand first half and the North Stand second and unless the opposition chooses to swap ends, that's what we do .. It's like Liverpool coming out at Anfield and choosing to line up, with the keeper between the sticks, at the Anfield Road end and they'll kick towards the Kop in the first half ... and after the toss they choose to remain that way .. it'll never happen. Liverpool will always run out and take up position with their keeper in goal at the Kop end and unless the opposition chooses to switch ends, they'll attack the Anfield Road end first half and the Kop second in 95% of the games.

For Boro .. we do it the other way round .. we come out and set up to attack the South Stand first half and the North Stand second in 95% of our games

Basically, you kick towards where your main support is second half incase you have to stage a second half comeback and set up camp in front of the vocal part of your home support. Gives and advantage (allegedly) in the second half when the opposition is tiring and feeling under pressure.

You must know by now that the Boro never do anything in a normal way.

Blackburn at home we lost and attacked the South Stand in the second half.

I don't think it makes any difference which half we attack the South Stand. Attacking the South Stand does seem to help us a little.

Statistics.

We've scored far more second-half goals in the North Stand than we have in the South.

Be mad to change it.
But we've barely attacked the South stand in the second half of games since we've been at Riverside - so it would be a tiny sample size for comparisons sake .. That's like saying the fastest route to the shops is the route I always take because I've never timed it any other way .. :)

Let the players decide , they will have a feeling for which they prefer.
Personally I think we should attack the North 1st half , the South are worth a goal when they are up for it.

To be honest the south stand has been pretty quiet for a few games now.
RF seem to be doing their best to kill any second half atmosphere:

come on middlesbrough
thud thud thud
play mighty boro
thud thud thud
come on middlesbrough
thud thud thud
e i ooooooo
thud thud thud

It isn't always our choice? The away team may win the toss and recognise the South is the noisy end and want us shooting towards the North in the second, not the South?
