Asylum seekers to be sent to..... Rwanda

I agree that there's a massive flaw in the system. It should be possible to claim asylum from outside of the country and get assisted transport.
As for people trafficking I don't know what the answer is.
the problem with this claim that you have to apply prior to getting here and go through a complex process is that the real asylum seekers won't have the time and safety to apply, they can't pop down the post office in whichever oppressive regime it is to get a passport, they probably don't have access to a british embassy or internet to do applications.

The whole idea that it can be organised that way is fantasy. But it appeals to some people, because it makes it impossible for people in need of help to come here. But it does allow the rich to come over here and exploit like our own rich people already do.

If you see this as a positive move then I worry about your mental health.

We are talking about human beings. Abused and exploited by traffickers. Could anybody argue that shipping them off to Rwanda is a humane response? this is right-wing extremism.
IT ALSO A DISGUSTING, CYNICAL ACT OF AN EGOTISTICAL MANIAC LOOKING TO PROTECT HIS POWER. JUST LIKE THE EQUALLY DISGUSTING USE OF CONFLICT IN UKRAINE TO BOLSTER RIGHT WING SUPPORT BY FEIGNING SOLIDARITY.
We have our own, home-made Donald Trump. A despicable human being; a parasitical millionaire, inbred through generations of entitled posh morons, whose every second of life is an affront to mankind.

I genuinely believe we are reaching tipping point. We might have to take to the streets to remove these parasites. Civil disobedience is coming especially when you consider the fools who were hoodwinked by his nationalist posturing and actually voted for the maniac will find themselves struggling to make ends meet. Inflation spiralling. Wages stagnating. AND NOT AN EU IMMIGRANT IN SIGHT TO THROW THE BLAME AT.

Democracy is being eroded everyday.
Let's get him to visit Ukraine every day and hopefully one of his bosses bombs will land right on his head, ideally with gnasher holding his hand.

So 28% refused initially…. 72 % approved initially.
And of the 28% refused, 3/4 appeal, and 1/3 of those are successful.
So the overwhelming majority are found to be legitimate asylum seekers
I think it's purely about numbers for some people. They want to find ways to make more people 'illegitimate' asylum seekers, because the country is full up and we don't have enough people in the NHS or something. That's the excuses they use at least.

I have to concur with the above comment. It is illegal and a country should exercise its rights to protect its borders. I feel uncomfortable this detention centre is out all the way in Kenya. It should be on our shores. I hope this sets a precedent and deters anyone who risks their lives to come to the UK illegally.
Rwanda isn't in Kenya, its not illegal to seek asylum

In 2018, Rwandan police opened fire on a group of protesting refugees, killing 12. Last year, the Rwandan government rejected the UK governmen's recommendation to 'conduct transparent, credible and independent investigations into allegations of human rights violations including deaths in custody and torture'. That was last July. Nine months later Patel is signing a deal with them.

But we have people on here defending it. I don't say this lightly, but you should be ashamed of yourselves.

It is absolutely staggering if true. Must admit a little bit of me thinks the outrage and blood-lust of the Conservative base will be sated by the announcement itself, it's also conveniently distracted attention from other more damaging stories (that this story in itself can be viewed as "less damaging" by the government is incredible in itself).

Wouldn't surprise me if it never happens, or is at least shelved until the next big scandal which needs covering up.

Besides the clear inhumanity of this, the cost is estimated at £1.4bn, a cost that would certainly spiral upwards.

Even in a purely financial sense this simply will not work, so in a time of massive financial pressures, our government seek to waste more puplic money just to keep the racists happy.

Oh and the massive dead cat.

Some disgusting comments on here, it isn't wrong for people to want to seek a better life.
It isn't but that isn't what asylum is for. Asylum is about seeking safety.

I don't know what the answer is. Ideally there would be some sort of independent global organisation, funded by all nations, that determines asylum wherever people arrive into a safe country. Each country agrees an amount of asylum seekers they can accommodate. That organisation then decides which country they should go to. They might send them to a country where they speak the language, where they have other family etc. Basically, remove the political element of it.

That would take common sense, pragmatism, and political moderatism so sadly it will never happen

Unfortunately, the political element it the cause in the first place.

Not recent no, it was a long time ago.
That's what I was thinking, but as @LaPennaBianca pointed out, they also have more recent form:

Boris Johnson: "Rwanda is one of the safest countries on the world".
