Asylum seekers to be sent to..... Rwanda

I have to concur with the above comment. It is illegal and a country should exercise its rights to protect its borders. I feel uncomfortable this detention centre is out all the way in Kenya. It should be on our shores. I hope this sets a precedent and deters anyone who risks their lives to come to the UK illegally.

Every time you think the government can't get any worse in it's decision making along comes something else to despair at.

Having said that, many on here and around the country will be delighted with this decision and proud to be British and the way we treat others, especially those from certain places. Their reasons for supporting this will be wrapped up in many different ways and excuses, but in my opinion the real reason whether unconscious or overt, is racism.

What a sad country we have become and what a very sad world we are living in.

BLM & RLM

I'd be concerned at the optics of us sending asylum seekers to a country where people have fled as asylum seekers. What do we do when the first asylum seekers die under the poor treatment in Rwandans camps?

It's not, but deliberately evading border controls and entering a country illegally is.

But the article is about sending asylum seekers over there to be processed, they have done nothing illegal in coming here to seek asylum.

It's utterly reprehensible and typical of this government to try and win the racist vote.

Why would this stop people trafficking or illegal immigration? It's a blatant lie.

Also if they are found to be held in awful conditions and treated inhumanly, who is responsible?

I agree that there's a massive flaw in the system. It should be possible to claim asylum from outside of the country and get assisted transport.
As for people trafficking I don't know what the answer is.

Racists will love this. Real vote winner.

Doesn't Rwanda have a recent problem with terrible human rights atrocities? Oh well never mind.
Not recent no, it was a long time ago.

The first sentence is the scary part though isn't it? The timing of this policy is to distract from partygate and to get support for the local elections. It's an openly racist policy. Pandering only to the bigots of this country. Yet it will be effective. How scary is that?

Some interesting stats information here for anybody interested.

I often wonder how many of those who would defend the governments hardline and downright cruel asylum policy, (not to mention the vast costs involved in sending people 1000s of miles away…and back) bother to ever look at any information beyond the Daily Mail and Express headlines….

  • In 2020, there were around 6 asylum applications for every 10,000 people living in the UK. Across the EU27 there were 11 asylum applications for every 10,000 people. When compared with EU countries, the UK ranked 14th out of the individual countries in terms of the number of asylum applications per capita.

  • The percentage of asylum applicants refused at initial decision reached its highest point at 88% in 2004. Since then, the refusal rate has been falling overall and was at 28%, its lowest point since 1990.

So 28% refused initially…. 72 % approved initially.
And of the 28% refused, 3/4 appeal, and 1/3 of those are successful.
So the overwhelming majority are found to be legitimate asylum seekers

At a cost of 1.6 billion too, wonder which tory stands to benefit from that. This government is beyond evil but like plenty have said it will keep the racists on side

This is a scheme which is not only cruel but a scheme which will cost billions. This is during a cost of living crisis when people are having to go without food.

The government would rather its population went hungry so they can set up a scheme to please its racist base.

For this government, when it comes to being cruel, money is never an object.

How would that work? People have a legal right to seek asylum in any country so which country is going to temporarily house them while they apply for asylum in a foreign country that is hell bent on avoiding it's responsibilities?

Well, one clear answer to reduce migration is to stop providing weapons and support to countries who are causing people to flee their home in the first place.
