Asylum seeker guilty of Hartlepool stabbing death

An absolutely horrific story. Unfortunately incidents are becoming all too common now with illegal immigrants. I'm not sure what the answer is, but stopping illegal immigration and ensuring adequete vetting for those coming into the country is becoming desperately important. I genuinely worry about that the country will be like when my children grow up.

Maybe a government could spend money on processing claims faster, and make a real effort to stop the traffickers profiting from this
RIP the victim

There is no such thing as an illegal immigrant prior to the claim being processed.

Stop parroting tory lies.
I'm not a tory and therefore I'm hardly going to "parrot" one of their lies.

He was an illegal immigrant though. He came across on a ferry from Amsterdam illegally.

But if you're an asylum seeker you're no longer an illegal immigrant. There's no "correct" way to arrive as an asylum seeker.

It seems that the article's author didn't care to include this fact when explaining how he came to the UK.

Nothing against you @northernrower it just seems that the media conversation around this is so ill-informed

No, he's an asylum seeker awaiting his hearing, which should have been completed by now. He's not an illegal immigrant until after his case has been heard.

People fleeing wars, persecution etc don't always have the documentation that we do when we work or holiday abroad.

It's time that the media made that clear and stopped telling porkies.

Agree 👍

It's extremely dangerous language the media use - hidden agenda or laziness.......🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

But needs to stop. Instead of "illegal immigrant" which he wasn't, there should be questions being asked as to WHY dangerous individuals such as this is are in our country and hasn't had his application reviewed.

It's an extremely convenient point the RWM continually overlooks. £241m and counting trying to get this batsh*t crazy Rwanda policy off the ground (pardon the pun) when this money could have been spent on employing/training staff to crack through the asylum seeker backlog.

But this is a bit boring isn't it.......not as sexy as deportations to unsafe African countries. Something to keep the RW a bit moist.

I think what northernrower is saying is that he wants asylum claims to be processed properly so that those who shouldn't be allowed to stay here can leave more quickly and if the Tories hadn't deliberately created no way of asylum seekers coming here in an orderly fashion and also deliberately creating a massive backlog of people waiting for decisions, this type of thing would be less likely to happen.

He hasn’t lived in the UK for that period of time, he has lived in Europe, I believe he lived in Germany for 10 years - should the tories have processed his claim in Germany? Where was he fleeing from?

Perhaps the Germans should have done the processing after a 10 year stay there.
