In reply to boroben92, We don't need to replace the 10 academy players , but a weak academy will get beat most weeks , and the academy players still here will struggle to improve. I hope we do recruit some young players for the academy to replace some of the ones deamed surplus. The academy should provide our future 1st team players.

Losing ten from the Academy is just the wastage from the system, for whatever reason these guys haven't merited a further contract. That's all, it isn't a bad sign it's just business as usual. It doesn't matter if the academy teams get beat, that isn't important it is about developing players for the first team or perhaps to make money on if they move to a team lower down the pyramid. Results are a side effect of a successful Academy not the reason for having one.

The whole point of the academy is that they are their to learn and grow with the end goal of becoming a player for Middlesbrough football club first team. If the club believe the 10 lads who have been released never have any chance of that then they have made the right decision. I watched Stephen Wearne in a friendly against Hartlepool last pre season and he looked absolutely no where near it.

2005-2010 : Cattermole, Craddock, Josh Walker, Seb Hines, Jonathon Grounds, Jason Steele, Rhys Williams, Franks, Joe Bennett, Luke Williams

2010-2015 : Gibson, Reach, Ripley, Smallwood, Christian Burgess, Jordan Jones

2015-2020 : Dael Fry, Tavernier, Harry Chapman, Djed Spence, Nathan Wood, Hayden Coulson

During the last 8 years or so, we have loaned players from other academies which have stopped us producing our own, Lewis Baker, Nmecha, Chalobah, McEchrean, Jack Harrison, Conner Roberts, Ameobi, Veljkovic, Niemly, Zuculini all stolen a spot on our bench and stopped us producing our own talent.

We need to get away from that, 2000-05 - we had quality and quantity come through. 05-10 quality and quantity dipped remarkably. 05-10 - 2 players came through that were better than lower league. Last 5 years looks a little better in quality but not quantity. We have to do better. The last 15 years have been a relative failure of out youth system, the odd quality player and a lot of dross.
