Anonymous poll - England win World Cup or Boro promotion

Given the choice which would you pick

  • Boro promoted in the summer

    Votes: 140 67.3%
  • England win World Cup in Qatar

    Votes: 68 32.7%

  • Total voters
    208
Well on just checking I am relieved to see the vote isn’t 51.89% to 48.11% at least.

We seem to have 60/190 that want England to do better than the Boro, surprised at that I must say. Bloomin Little Englanders, probably all right wing nationalists as their team played in blue the other night too.

When it's football it's Boro for me all day long. England will always come after Boro. When it's Cricket it's Yorkshire then England.
Match is on but not even watching it. Probably not watched a full England game for a few years now. Likewise it's been a while since I watched a Champions League game no interest at all but if Boro lose it can sometimes spoils my whole night

Did anyone listen to talk sport yesterday?

They were discussing this (England World Cup v anything) and the hosts were as surprised with the results as I am. Their listeners were 50/50. They went further and said England World Cup over pretty much anything which I wouldn’t agree with but then one was a Man U fan so success looks different to them.

I wonder if we asked this question further down the leagues if the percentage split would be even higher. Marske United to win league promotion v England World Cup…100% for Marske perhaps?

I imagine there is a significant difference when you factor in geographical locations. More importance seems to be placed on the national team the further south you go in my experience, which is probably reflected in the talksport poll as they, like most media, are very London centric.

I think it probably does depend on who you support for that question.

I'd pick Middlesbrough to win the Premier League over an England World Cup win, but that's because I support Middlesbrough and we can only dream of that happening in normal circumstances.

I expect that Man City fans would be much more divided as they're now used to regular trophies at club level and have seen their club win the league 5 times in the last 9 seasons.

That's not what the poll is asking. I voted for an England World Cup win over Boro promotion but it doesn't mean I want England to do better than Boro. If the question was Boro Premier League Win over England World Cup Win, I think it would be 100% in favour of the former. Even an FA Cup or League Cup win makes it a very different question.

The World Cup is the pinnacle of international football but promotion to the PL is not the pinnacle in club football. England have not won it in my lifetime and if I live to normal life expectancy, there's maybe 9-10 more chances for them to do so. Over the same period Boro could be promoted and relegated 20 times each.

If Boro do not go up this season, I think we'll have an outstanding chance of doing so next season and would probably be better equipped for the PL at that point. But that does not mean I do not want us to go up this season - you've got to grasp the opportunity anytime it is within reach.

Anyway, there's no reason we can't have both and what a year 2022 would be if it ended with Boro in the top half of the Premier League and England as World Champions!

I voted for Boro promotion, but I know far well if we have another Karanka season in the Prem then I`ll be "Wish we were still in the Championship"

Fickle as **** me like

That wasn't the question was it?
No, I am well aware it wasn’t the question, however, it was my conclusion based on the votes cast. I am well aware those voting are doing so on a purely hypothetical basis based on a choice that can’t be made to succeed as both could happen, or both fail too, nothing is ever cut and dried despite everyones wishes.

People might not want to admit it or be comfortable about my conclusion when it is phrased as such, but it is a logical conclusion that can be drawn, as people are making a free choice of what they would prefer to happen between success for the Boro or success for England, which is perfectly fine by the way. I am surprised at the outcome as it currently stands.

It is absolutely ok to love your country and vote for a successful vision you’d like to see come to pass, even if it is not eventually achieved as you’d hoped.

I suppose if the question had the twist added "England win the world cup, or Boro get promoted, but if you choose England, Boro will never be promoted again", many more would vote Boro. I think I would have.

If however, the question was "England win this World Cup, or Boro get promoted this season", more would vote for England. We all know Boro will get many more chances, and will be promoted again at some point, but you'll be lucky to get 20 chances to see your team win the WC in a life time, and I've had 9 of those already.

However the question is phrased, some people have made a personal choice that they would rather see England success this year over Boro and that is fine. Like I say it is all hypothetical and yes the number of chances for success in a lifetime will differ due to the frequency of competition, however there are no guarantees Boro will be promoted again In our lifetime. We all hope that they are and we believe they will, but we can’t predict anything with certainty other than the obvious, but non of us know how long our lifetime has left.

The big moments of failure for England haunt me more than the moments of failure for Boro.

My week is ruined by Middlesbrough losing a league match, but I've long been over our relegation or our failure to make the play-offs.
I can't pretend that the 1997 finals really upset me because I was 4 years old and had no clue they were happening at the time.

An individual loss for England spoils my day a bit, but I'm fine after that, but then I can barely bring myself to think about the Euros final, we were so close.

At the same time though, that's probably because England have been a lot closer to winning something than Middlesbrough in the last decade and play for less frequently.

I'd probably have similar feelings if Middlesbrough lost another final or missed out on the title narrowly, but when the stakes aren't so high there's always another game around the corner to wipe away the depression of the last defeat with Middlesbrough.

Felt despondent after Barnsley, 3 days later we knocked out Spurs.

England lose on penalties in a major final, some of our fans embarassing themselves and there's 2 months of goading and self reflection before England play again.
Weird.
