Ali Brownlee Commentary

Was gonna post something similar. Some folk slagged him off relentlessly, they all kept quiet when he died mind.
That’s true but not from me as always said I loved his optimism and his passion and as I always said that we all knew if he wasn’t being paid to cover the game he’d have still been there anyway.

I remember when he missed a game his first in decades as he had laryngitis and even then they still called him and he was sat listening to the game at home gutted he wasn’t there.

I’ve said it before I’ll say it again the club will never have a another fan like Ali.

His passion for his club and his town was truly unique.

God we miss him

I remember just prior to his passing i tweeted him when he was poorly and off air a bit saying how much of a difference he made to me when i was working Saturdays and couldn't get to the game and could hear his excitement and passion for the club in his poetic like description of what was happening on the pitch. He took time to reply and told me i was kind to say such a thing. Truly gutted and was knocked sideways when he passed, amazing for the fact i had never met him but could be moved so much on a person's passing. Legend.

Agreed, I met him a few times when he ran Junior Reds back in the 80's / early 90's with Gordon Cox and I was a young kid, but his passing probably impacted me more than any other celebrity death simply because he was a constant on the radio, and Boro game on the radio equaled Ali Brownlee to me.

I remember going for a run the night BBC Tees ran a tribute show to him, and having it playing on my phone and I had to stop a couple of times to dry my eyes.

You're lucky to have met him, i would have loved to have sat down and chatted Middlesbrough with him. Such an infectious tone/attitude and i would have been interested in hearing his opinion of the last 18 months.

Truly unique was Ali Brownlee. I listened to a couple of away commentaries since he passed and it's just not the same - how could it be?
His early efforts were a bit frenzied but he really grew into it and although his passion for Boro always shone through, he ended up being a superb commentator.

I had the pleasure of stopping for a chinwag around a year before he died and what a lovely, friendly, funny guy he was.

Very sadly missed but remember, we were so lucky to have had him.

Speaking of listening to his commentaries, unlike the current incumbent, there was no mistaking who had scored. Yet, he never fell into the trap of sounding like a fan he was always professional and told you what had happened, but the tone of his voice and the method of delivery was distinctly different.

This infuriates me

As many is the time I’ve been listening to the radio and the phone rings or some one is at the door and I come back in to room to hear drury cheering on the radio it’s a goal what a great goal etc

I punch the air shout get in

Yes it’s boro nil Stoke one after a great strike from the Stoke man

Eh wtf. 😡

Met him very briefly once in the ticket office.. He wouldn't let me leave until I'd taken a Fruit Pastille off of him. Weird to see the man who provides the voice - he was huge in stature presence and in our hearts

I interviewed him while I was at college around 2012 and he was still overly optimistic as a Boro fan even then, when we were going nowhere under Mowbray.

When Ali's passing was announced on Radio Tees my wife and I both shed a tear for a man we never met but yet knew as a dear friend. RIP Ali

Yep totally agree. The thing with Brownlee was that he had those big memorable moments but his main asset was that he painted a picture of what was happening with such accuracy. Half the time nowadays you have no idea, there's a goal, and you still don't know who's scored

Posted this the other day but I was lucky enough to knock about with him a bit, good mates with some of his colleagues.

What a fun guy with hilarious backstage stories, natural raconteur. Pretty much the same off air as on. Huge, iconic presence during the best ever time to be a Boro fan and he was dearly loved. I’m sure his family are proud of the affection we all hold him in. Couldn’t pick a better person and more talented broadcaster to be commentating on our glory years.

Once again cheering loudly for the opposition attacks.
