Ali Brownlee Commentary

Just heard on Talk Sport about a book by Charlie Ecclleshare called The Beautiful Poetry of Football Commentary.

He spoke very highly of our own AB and in particular the commentaries in the two comebacks in the UEFA Cup.

Just listened to them again and it brought tears to my eyes.
Still gets me everytime I listen to it. Agree with the comment above that a little bit of the enjoyment of supporting the Boro was lost when Ali sadly passed away.

Looking back at some of his memorable moments makes it even sadder that he was subject to some real vitriol from a large section of our fan base at times. "In the clubs pocket", "rose tinted specs", "club PR machine" etc, all because he showed a passion for the club that many of them couldn't understand.

"If football is the beautiful game, then commentators are its poets.

Whether it's the brevity of Barry Davies, the boundless enthusiasm of Clive Tyldesley or the sheer eloquence of Peter Drury's monologues, the canon of football commentary is replete with memorable lines that would have some of the great classical orators nodding in appreciation. Curated by football journalist Charlie Eccleshare, The Beautiful Poetry of Football Commentary is a glorious anthology of iconic lines, set out as poems, celebrating the best commentators that have ever graced a microphone. Each poem is accompanied by 'scholarly' analysis capturing the enduring power of language on the beautiful game."

So, drink it in, and immerse yourself in classic verse from Ali Brownlee, Andy Gray, Brian Moore, David Coleman, John Motson, Jon Champion, Jonathan Pearce, Kenneth Wolstenholme, Martin Tyler, and many more.

I caught this on the radio at the time but didn’t hear the name of the book, so thanks for posting.

I remember having the DVDs of the UEFA Cup comebacks which included the footage from sky sports and channel 5 (I think), they were class in their own way. It was Gordon McQueen doing us for Sky Sports News.

Sadly one of greatest football orators is now a pariah and persona non gratis but his radio commentaries were truly unique
Yes, always used to look forward to them going to Maine Road in the days of Radio 2 sports report or later radio 5 for his match summeries, always used to weave in some classics studies, what was it he called Maine Road?

Was gonna post something similar. Some folk slagged him off relentlessly, they all kept quiet when he died mind.
