Alex Gilbert

So if the comments above are right.. how does a pro footballer get to age 22 with less than 10 senior appearances? Surely the lad should have been out on loan in that time. Older than Coburn who now has 50+ senior appearances to his name.

Bizarre act, signing players like this.

Away, Marcus Browne was not class at all, christ. He was a player we took a punt on because he was good for West Ham Under 23's, turned out not to be good enough.

I haven't written Gilbert off, by the way, I'm just stating that it is starting to feel similar to when we signed Browne. Good for a Premier League Under 23's side, never actually proved himself at senior level... Adding to the fact we've been utterly useless and he still can't get a look in.

I get it, some fans do go over the top with their criticism of players, but fans are also allowed to make an objective opinion as well.
Marcus Browne was class.. he’d proved himself at league one level and was a very astute signing. 2 goals in 5 games before his injury.. he was flying.

Alex Gilbert has been injured I think.. plus he plays in a position we have been doing well in. It’s not like he a right back!

Last season seems to have ruined the judgement of many fans. Giles, Akpom, Ramsey & Archer.. ‘our best four players’ - three of them weren’t even ours!

We’ve made some very good signings this summer and into the start of the season. We haven’t fully clicked as a team yet (definitely not as a defensive unit) but the early signs are promising.

Browne had some decent games during the behind closed doors period under Warnock and then got injured. I was actually a bit disappointed that we didn't persevere with him. Some are too quick to want rid of players, who are decent for the level that we are at.

Two schools of thought. You only buy the players you need and you hope they all work out or you buy more players than you need and hope some of them work out. Of the three forwards we bought (Rogers, Silvera and Gilbert), Gilbert is clearly the least experienced so he has the hardest task to get into the team. Made even harder by the signing of Greenwood and some bad timing with injuries.
Doesn't mean he won't come good but he's got a lot of ground to make up.

Has to be said that so far Scott's "punts" don't have a good track record. Boyd Munce, Hoppe and Conteh have all failed to make the grade. Hoppe is looking like a bad misjudgement, the other two were perfectly reasonable low cost punts for potentially high reward. We have gone big on the Scott punts this season if you also include Nkrumah and Agyemang. You have to hope that by the end of the season, at least one of those 5 has nailed down a first team place.

It is very strange that like....Engel doesn't look like an improvement on Coulson so far....
Someone on here posted that Engel was in Championship team of the week - last weekend.

I was a little surprised, but I thought it was OK against QPR considering he is so new.

Obviously he's only played 3 league games and come to a different country, so its early days.

Ref Browne - It seems to have found his standard at Oxford United - solid Div 1 - I think hes been there 3 years

One of the players on holiday. I guess we don't know the mental state of the players, but it really surprises me that the players on the fringes of the team, are on holiday.

Not sure why, their second goal came down that side....and Engel didn't get over the half way line....

I do agree he could have done better for their second goal and he attacking impact was limited, however he did produce an excellent block in the first half that probably saved a goal. He was also left criminally exposed a few times in the first half. As Vincent Company said last season were are one of the poorest sides in the division when we haven't got the ball.

How you get in the team of the week when you get beat at home is beyond me 😕

Ref Gilbert

From what I remember Brentford have a B team opposed to under 21s and he played in that quite a bit in that. Brentford must have thought that was better for him than a loan.

We had to a contribution to his development costs, but otherwide no fee. I would guess the Boro thought it was a Djed Spence type signing. It took over 4 months for him to make his debut.
