Albums that should have been great but weren't

Oasis - Be Here Now

I actually like the album for what it is, but it didn't stand up well against the first two albums. Too many songs were too long, were weak lyrically and it was over-produced.

Noel hates the album and says his biggest regret is releasing songs such as The Masterplan and Acquiese as B-Sides.

Here's what the tracklisting could have been for Be Here Now, if they hadn't have released some of these songs as B-Sides It would have rivalled the first two albums in my opinion.....

Be Here Now
Acquiese
My Big Mouth
Headshrinker
Do You Know What I Mean
It's Getting Better Man
Talk Tonight
Half The World Away
Don't Go Away
Stand By Me
The Masterplan
Fade Away

It's the "difficult 3rd album" syndrome.
First one = all the inspiration, loads of tunes built up over some time, a labour of love
Second one = quick, have you any tunes or demos left over? Bung'em out
Third one = now what do we do? Oh, let's just see what happens when we get in the studio

Any other albums fall into this category?

Squeeze were always 'my' band, and the follow up LP to the excellent East Side Story (which included Labelled With Love, Is That Love? & Tempted) was the very poor Sweets From A Stranger. They did not release a consistently good album again, in my opinion, although if the better tracks from Play & Some Fantastic Place were put together as a single album, it would be far and away their best album overall.

I suggest you just need to open your ears and start looking further - there's loads of great music around now, you just wont get it on Radio 1 or commercial radio...
Never listened to radio 1 since the 70s, R2 for 20years. I do listen to R6 but mainly web based yank stations. Got tickets for KOL but doubt it will bbe on now. Theres little I enjoy, I wish it wasnt like that.

As a massive Suede fan, they'd always struggle to repeat Dog Man Star especially after Bernard left, but for me Coming Up is pretty ropey and such a contrast from DMS.

I am a big Suede fan too and during the whole Britpop era I much preferred them and Pulp to Blur and Oasis (though got into Oasis quite a bit later on once I saw beyond the Gallaghers being unlikeable tools). However, while DMS was a great album I still didn't actually mind Coming Up. Yes it was different but I still listen to it quite often and thought it was actually quite a decent album.

The Pixies Bossanova album was a bit of a let down after Doolittle for me.

I don’t agree with Republic.

Adam and the Ants - Prince Charming

Don't know if it should have been great, but the album I was most disappointed by was kid A. Was really excited about hearing what their new direction sounded like and had started growing out of the indie/rock/Brit poppy stuff I listened to as a kid.
Played it a few times. Gave it away to a flatmate. Turned out that 10000hz legend was the record I was looking for.
