Adam Peaty

Doesn't he have the top 16 times in history for the event?
Surprised he's not being investigated for doping by the sleuths on twitter 😉

I put a post on here a few months ago after he smashed the field again in the World Championships. The man is incredible and a true phenomenon.

Guy on the radio was saying he never thought he'd see a 57 sec breaststroke for the 100m and AP is now getting 56 second ones.

Went on to say "To put that into context for people who don't know anything about swimming, Mark Spitz was doing 56 second 100m's in butterfly in the 70's!".

I was going to say, "well that clears that up" but I've checked & he is wrong.

The 57 second butterfly was 1962:

Mark Spitz got it to 56.29 in '67 and got it down to 54.27 by '72 Olympics.
It is now 49.50.

I cant think of a Brit more dominant in world sport ever in one event thanthis fella. Supreme.

PS And I include Phil the Power.

Destroyed the beat

Also Alex Yee. Superstar of the future.

Lewis Hamilton (puts on hard hat)

Before the games he had the top 20. There's been a couple of decent times from another swimmer in Tokyo so that might have pulled the number down a bit.

Peaty is unbeaten in 7 years.....

It's impressive.

Hamilton has won 6 out of the last 7 Championships which I think is also impressive.

Honourable mention to Mark Cavendish too who for long periods of his career has been nearly unbeatable (on sprint stages) in a sport which has much more variables than swimming.

Thing with Hamilton, he has been given a help with technology (fastest car) to get where he has got to. Peaty has done it with pure ability.

I agree but to get the fastest car you usually have to have the most ability/be the fastest driver. Barring 1 season where Rosberg got quite lucky, the other Mercedes drivers haven't got anywhere near him (on a consistent basis).

Amazed Tom Daley is getting all the headlines, great win for him but surely peaty deserves the headlines

I know it's not the Olympics but as we've mentioned Hamilton, it would be remiss not to make note of Dougie Lampkin who was at the top of his game and dominated for a heck of a long time with 7 consecutive World titles

It is weird that we don't think of him in the way we do the likes of Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah. I know they're athletics but he is literally the best there's ever been and possibly ever will be.

Farah is a bit tainted surely now after the Salazar business?

If you mean Adam Peaty, he's the best at 50m and 100m breaststroke. But someone will beat his times eventually - it is a sprint event. But let's not get carried away here. He's not the fastest swimmer ever. He only competes over short courses. Breaststroke is the slowest swimming style and both men and women swim faster in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.

But he is the best in the business at his event.
