Aaagh Ameicanism

I'm afraid so. Trump does nothing but egg on the right wing vigilante groups. I'm scared of what's going to happen when they "monitor the voting"..... If we could just move back right now we would do so. If Biden doesn't get a landslide there are certainly going to be problems.

Reading your thoughts is really worrying. There are so many people and external states attempting to manipulate thoughts and minds the whole landscape in the USA is very scary.

They are only words. My wife is American and I occasionally find myself using US language. For example I now say bathroom instead of bog when I announce that I'm going for a sh1te.

I don’t know why people get so wound up about words. I called a tv show “trash” recently and one of my mates got really annoyed about it, was actually quite entertaining how much it bothered him.

Americanisms don't usually bother me anymore and some - like the use of the word offence in football - are just practical, but i just do not understand this date thing. Why put the number that changes every day in the middle?
Absolutely this. Most British people are smart enough to interpret american spellings, words and idioms but the date think is just stupid.

It has no logical basis.

It's true, but you're seeing a creeping use of such tactics in the UK.
People no longer seem to trust experts etc

yes, very depressing really
I read something a few days ago where it stated that there was a sizable percentage of people in the UK who believed in some of the conspiracy theories put forth by qanon (?) Such as the elite Hollywood child trafficking group Etc
I just think people are confused and nervous and quite possibly need to look for simple and tangible answers to what are, things that sadly are very complex and don't always lend themselves to simple answers

You strike me as a really bright poster and pretty balanced, so your views have certainly made me think.
I want to believe you are being a bit dramatic, but I'm now not so sure.

Good. More than 50 million votes already cast
Prediction of eventual record turnout 150 million
Trump running out of money withdrawing adverts in swing states
Bad Barrett about to be appointed
Vigilantes getting ready for action
Trump ready to dispute result
Hopefully the first two points will lead to a big win for Biden

Agree - a lot of the things that we call Americanisms were actually British 1st, eg soccer and sidewalk as two I can think of from top of my head.

The date though is just daft. Could almost uderstand it if they had yy/mm/dd but not the random way they have it - I'm sure there must be somebody who knows the history behind it and can explain it so that it will then make sense.
It will NEVER make sense!!

I have to admit that words like "elevator" are natural to me now. In other areas I am confusingly mid-Atlantic, I never know whether to say "skedule" or "shedule" and "add-ult" or "a-dult" any more...I know one is UK and one is US but I'll be ****ed if I can remember which is which!!)

Oh and water/wader......why can't anyone understand me when I ask for a glass of waTer??? WTF else could I be asking for? At least everyone here understands when I ask for a Diet Coke (in London I always had to ask for Pepsi as Coke in a Boro accent threw them).

I sincerely hope I'm wrong.[/QUOT this is hard to predict

Yes, I hate the lack of a 't'

How to win an argument about sport with an American
Start with American Football.
Say it's not really football because only one player kicks the ball.
Then counter it with the fantastic plays the intricate game of chess
You will go on for about 10 minutes about running and catching ability
You can have a laugh about "touchdowns"
But finally say to them
"So a young player can enter this ball game go through his whole career, earn millions of dollars...... And NEVER touch the ball.

I've had the "chess" one quoted to me many times and my reply is always that I wouldn't dream of watching a chess match either.

It's a wonderful game, but no one should be able to deny that "football" is a misnomer (and makes it extra complicated for ex-pat Brits to talk about sport!)

Years ago when I worked for Chevron in Aberdeen, one of the lads went out to San Ramon on business and they "treated" him to a game. He told me when he came back that it is even more boring live than it is on TV. Having sat in the bar when it's on, I can well believe it.
