Hes been very clumsy at best. I think what he is trying to say is for huge number of people on teesside there are no privileges from being white or otherwise because of abject poverty. Would you say families in poverty reliant on food banks are white privileged. I think the phrase is devisive and doesn't mend anything. there are two issues systematic racially prejudice which is abhorrent and the dreadful social inequalities which put kids below the poverty line which is also terrible both need tackling.
Yes, you’re confusing privilege with poverty.
Privilege is being prejudged or suffering worse than someone else because of a factor, for example if they can walk down the street without being told to go home, if they can apply for a job and have the same chance of an interview as “John Smith” when their name is “Shahid Malik”, when they can drive to Tesco without an increased chance of a stop and search by police based on their colour of their skin. White and non white bith experience poverty, but regardless of income levels and situation, the very colour of your skin automatically provides privilege even though you may be completely unaware of it or disagree with it, it still happens.
Great comment on that thread was “it’s about learning about racism instead of experiencing it”
People can disagree with gender privilege and race privilege all they like but it definitely exists
As someone said the other day
A white person in the UK never gets told to go back to their own country.
I am sure polish communities have suffered such rascism
