A message from our Mayor....

Hes been very clumsy at best. I think what he is trying to say is for huge number of people on teesside there are no privileges from being white or otherwise because of abject poverty. Would you say families in poverty reliant on food banks are white privileged. I think the phrase is devisive and doesn't mend anything. there are two issues systematic racially prejudice which is abhorrent and the dreadful social inequalities which put kids below the poverty line which is also terrible both need tackling.

Yes, you’re confusing privilege with poverty.

Privilege is being prejudged or suffering worse than someone else because of a factor, for example if they can walk down the street without being told to go home, if they can apply for a job and have the same chance of an interview as “John Smith” when their name is “Shahid Malik”, when they can drive to Tesco without an increased chance of a stop and search by police based on their colour of their skin. White and non white bith experience poverty, but regardless of income levels and situation, the very colour of your skin automatically provides privilege even though you may be completely unaware of it or disagree with it, it still happens.

Great comment on that thread was “it’s about learning about racism instead of experiencing it”

People can disagree with gender privilege and race privilege all they like but it definitely exists

I don't live on Teesside but my best mate does and he sent me this quote earlier this morning. To be frank, I know nothing about him, having lost touch somewhat with local politics a long while back, but the mayor comes across very badly to me in that quote.

There is no question it exists. It is an unarguable fact. You might not agree with it but if you did your opinion, simply put, is wrong. It is staggering that the mayor can hold such views.

God knows what the policy and equality officers of Middlesbrough council are making of this.

Of course it exists i know the difference i was merely stating what i think preston was trying to get at which is for the poorest of the poor any privilege is an alien term and experience.

As someone said the other day
A white person in the UK never gets told to go back to their own country.

For lots of BAME people who were born here that must feel like a privilege.

Bloody hell. If the original post was at best a bit clumsy and tone deaf, the follow up demonstrates completely missing the point about what white privilege is and what it means.

It's another way to minimise and quieten the concerns of a community (however small/well integrated on Teesside) by suggesting they take a ticket and get in the queue, and wait for their turn. its been happening for generations, and the sooner its solved the better for everyone of any background.

TeessideLive usually can't wait to publish a story about our Andy.

No mention of this yet, strangely enough.

Yesterday the Gazette did report a study which found that police on Teesside are more likely to stop and search and to use force against black people:

"new analysis of figures from the Home Office has revealed that black people are much more likely than white people to be targeted by Cleveland Police officers."
"The analysis also found that Cleveland's workforce is less diverse than the population it serves, while black people are more likely to be detained by officers under the Mental Health Act, compared to white people."

I wonder if this is our mayor's response to this. I have met the mayor face to face a couple of times and have never trusted him. Even less so now.

I told him he was a racist before and he said 'lets meet face to face and have a conversation about it' I replied 'name a time and place..' he then blocked me on all social media..

he's fooking aweful man, his opposition is chuffin dreadful an all. the local labour party are the pits man
