A message from our Mayor....

I don't know when this was written but it is so crass. Centuries of evidence point to the fact that white people have more opportunities than black people. Yes there are many poor white people but get real Mr P do you really believe this. Even if it was Caprice Simone that makes it worse then you definitely believe it because you are repeating it

It was written by our mayor this morning at 1am.

o_Oo_O:oops: Wow. I can’t believe anybody, let alone somebody in a position of power, would think it’s acceptable to post something like that.

What a knobhead.

He'll be coordinating a campaign to get a statue of himself erected in Captain Cook's square any minute...

Black Lives Matter. And All Lives Matter

The horrific incident that took place 4,000 miles away is raising tensions here. The way George Floyd died must never happen again.

Let’s put the USA to one side for now and talk about Middlesbrough because that’s what we experience day to day.

Middlesbrough’s not perfect but it’s a relatively tolerant place and the rapid rise in our BAME population has happened with few major issues. Of course there is racism here and other kinds of discrimination. All forms of discrimination are wrong and we need to fight it.

All humans deserve an equal opportunity to learn and earn in peace. In the UK we’re very luck to have that opportunity. But for some of us there are barriers that make this more difficult.

The biggest barrier to progression in life in Middlesbrough, and almost anywhere, is always the same: poverty.

If you live in extreme poverty in Middlesbrough or Mumbai or Montreal then the odds are stacked against you - and your kids.

By some measures Middlesbrough is the most deprived place in England.

If you’re deprived in England then you’ll likely live a shorter life, have worse health and do less well at school. These negative outcomes are driven largely by poverty not skin colour.

Don’t listen to careless talk in the media about white privilege - look at the awful situations so many white and non-white families face in Middlesbrough and other places. Deprivation here appears to be colour blind.

We do need to fight all kinds of discrimination and we need to unite against the biggest issue that holds back progress: poverty.

As mayor of Middlesbrough my role is to fight for a better future for everyone. I promise to fight especially hard for anyone experiencing discrimination or poverty

I can sort of see what he's saying and by one metric he is right. Doesn't detract from the fact that there is systemic racism against black people around the world who face all of the poverty issues he is talking about, then have to deal with any other racial issues on top of that. Misplaced and misguided rather than hateful IMHO. The second one sounds a lot worse without the original one for context though.

And with that reply he's looking worse! I find it almost impossible to see how white people can say that white privilege doesn't exist or that there isn't systemic racism. For me it is in the eye of the beholder, can a man have the same experiences of sexism or harassment that a woman has had. Or experience racism from the point of view who is BAME?

This isn't a fully formed opinion, I'm interested in what others think.

I read yesterday: white privilege is not about what benefits you get from being white, but that being white is not a barrier - being white is never a negative.

Racism needs to be tackled, challenged & removed from society, as much as an thought can.. however & as one of the activists talking of George Floyd stated: its systems that need to change, fundamentally.. as they are what hold the majority down.. & benefit only a few..

Hes been very clumsy at best. I think what he is trying to say is for huge number of people on teesside there are no privileges from being white or otherwise because of abject poverty. Would you say families in poverty reliant on food banks are white privileged. I think the phrase is devisive and doesn't mend anything. there are two issues systematic racially prejudice which is abhorrent and the dreadful social inequalities which put kids below the poverty line which is also terrible both need tackling.
