9 day quiz - FINAL RESULTS published - Otto42's favourite matches (mid 1970s to 2020)

I'll go:

2-1 Bolton League Cup win, our first bit of silverware (notwithstanding the Anglo Scottish Cup Erimus 74!)
3-0 Banik Ostrava 04 - first 'proper' game in Europe
2-0 v Lazio 04 - we showed we could compete with the best in Europe.
spanishman please give NZBoro an extra point for recognising the ASC 👍

We got the football league championship trophy in 1995, surely that is a major piece of silverware even if the reason for winning it changed in 1992

bloody hell missed completely the Bolton Wembly match..... I only looked at home matches and Bolton were listed first on the page hahahahaha

Has to be

1. 29/02/04

2. our first big European game v Lazio. Zenden crashing in the second

3. Man U 2-0 FA Cup Jan 2002. Whelan and Campbell knocking out the favourites

29/02/04 Bolton 1 v 2 Boro in Cardiff. 128 yrs of hurt vanished. Lets be honest here, there is no point picking a 2nd and 3rd choice in the round of the quiz is there :p This sprang to mind as a suitable rendition.

Could not stop playing this.

However as everybody has highlighted their other games I will do the same as it is nice to see others reasonings and shared memories

16/09/04 Boro 3 v 0 Banik Ostrava our first taste of Uefa Cup footy on home soil. While the Geordies were home watching the bill, Jimmy and the dukes brace gave us a memorable second half in particular. We were left wanting more

03/02/04 Boro 2 v 1 Arsenal The game that gave us the opportunity to do the first two. Semi final second leg. We held a slender 1-0 lead. I was convinced Wenger would field a stronger team. Boro started ok. Massimo wasted a couple of opportunities and the oh oh‘s started to appear amongst the crowd. 1st half was a scrappy affair In reality, but just before H/T, Keown getting sent off was a huge help.
Midway through the 2nd half Bolo struck, 1-0 up we were on our way to Cardiff, Surely that was enough. However, in typical Boro fashion, Edu equalised a few minutes later, eek squeaky bum time. Boro never do it the easy way. Thankfully we rolled our sleeves down and Parnaby’s shot was deflected in by Jose Antonio Reyes (RIP). Phew, Cardiff here we come.

2/04 v Bolton --- only one answer needed i would think
11/04 v lazio 2-0 34k for our group E match ... european footie at the Boro against one of the best
12/02 v man U 3-1

lets give extra 3 points this round for matching ottos 2nd choice.....
Ok. If everyone picks the top one correctly I will do something with the 2nd and 3rd place scores. Like the last round of the last quiz. Not exactly the same.

3 extra points if 2nd & 3rd are correct in correct order.

2 extra points if 2nd & 3rd correct in wrong order. Or 2nd correct and 3rd wrong.

1 extra point if one of your 2nd or 3rd answers are correct for 3rd place. With you other guess being wrong.

1. League cup final win is a given.

2. Thought about Boro 5 Spurs 1 as a second choice - as on paper a fantastic result but it was the final home game of the season and Spurs had nothing to play for, had Luke Perry sent off in the first half. So my second game is the League Cup semi final second leg against Arsenal 2-1 win to get us to Cardiff

3. Middlesbrough 2 Lazio 0. Loved that game.

Erimus74 - I think you have forgotten to put in an answer so far. I will wait for you to give your answers before I publish the results.

As yet, I do not have the answers from Otto42. So I cannot start processing the results yet anyway.

I have the answers from Otto42. I have processed most of the results.

I am going to bend the rules a little and give Erimus74 enough time to submit his answers for the 2000-2005 round. As he was key to the first couple of quizzes.

I will publish the results table once I have answers from Erimus74.

In the meantime I can announce that the next day of the competition will be round 5 - summer 1995 to spring 2000.

For the future. If everyone answering on the day all get the correct first answer I will adopt the same rules as today. As a bit of a tie-breaker.

So, so sorry just got in

CC C up final

Banik our 1st europan game

Lazio European game

Apologies again

And thankyou for waiting, very much appreciated

The results are now in.

Here are the words from Otto42:

"A good period this one, I thought Venables was great getting us organised and keeping us up and then Steve Mac was able to establish us as a premier league side always looking up rather than down, something Robbo never quite managed

(3) Boro 2 Lazio 0, November 2004. We had finally arrived in Europe beating and out playing one of the top sides at home. Zenden outstanding and a packed Riverside
(2)Boro 2 Liverpool 0, November 2004. Again Zenden superb and we easily overcame a fellow Champions League contender....that 2004/5 looked the real deal, I seriously thought we were on the verge of joining the big boys after signing Viduka and JFH and going on a great run up to Christmas. As always with the Boro we had a post Christmas slump not helped by Viduka and Boatang getting injured.
(1) It has to be 29/4/2004 at the Millennium. Finally winning something!

There were plenty of other from 03/04 and 04/05 could have gone in...Arsenal Cup semi final, Spurs 1-0 and also from 02/03 when we beat Man Utd at Christmas and battered Sunderland early season. We really were good from 2002 to 2006, not sure we appreciated how competitive we were with Europe, cup semi finals and cup wins. Perhaps we underachieved in the league? "

As these are more recent matches I can find some videos....
