44.5 million for Gibbs White

Where's all this money coming from?

Admit that detailed knowledge of football finences across the English game doesn't exactly float my boat, but is there something I'm missing here, or is this the normal budgetary boost for a newly promoted team?

Mental spending and sheer number of signings.

I don't actually having anything against Forest, and their manager is a good despite his "classy man" comments, so I don't actually mind if they stay up, but it seems a huge gamble to bring in quite so many players and spend quite so much on your first season.

This is their 16th signing, and they have more to come.
It reminds me of Fulham a few years ago. Went up with a really good, together group of players, then spent £100m+, signed loads of players and went straight back down.

As much as I dislike Newcastle, and as much as they have spent a lot of money since they were taken over, they haven’t been daft. The amount they paid for Chris Wood and then giving him £80k/week is a bit bonkers but most of their business has been really smart.

Really they’ve just spent the 120m TV and prize money in advance, plus a bit on top.

I’m with others, it’s a crazy number of players but I still think it’s good recruitment. Their wage bill will have been nothing and nothing indicates they’re paying lunatic sums in wages (Lingard was 100k, on a one year deal) and it’s the big contracts that kill you.

They were also six players short from last season’s squad with the loanees going back.

Most importantly everyone they’ve signed are prime resale age, 23-25. People mention Fulham but they brought in lots of 30 somethings on big money, a lot of big club rejects. Forest are signing a different profile of up and coming players, Cucurella types if you like. If Forest do go down, all they need is 2 of the new players to impress and they can flip them for 40m+.

I still find it funny that Forest are signing two players a day, and everybody else is in world football is going “oooh it’s a hard market, we can’t possibly do any business until the last 10 seconds of the transfer window” 😁
