ExactlyOne of the great test matches for drama. Wagner bowled a wide the ball before so should have been a tie.
I actually think the Umpires bottled it a little with that call. It was almost like they didn’t want to make the decision that sealed the fate of the Test Match / Series. One of the great test matches for drama. Wagner bowled a wide the ball before so should have been a tie.
Not sure I agree with that as it’s manufacturing the result by not applying consistent rules in the sake of entertainment like in the F1, it also brings into question neutral umpires again given the decision not to award the wide was with a NZ umpire in GaffaneyI actually think the Umpires bottled it a little with that call. I think it would have a naff conclusion to what was a great Test though, so I don’t have any complaints.
I totally agree, not saying it was the right call. Rules are rules and they should be applied as such. Not sure I agree with that as it’s manufacturing the result by not applying consistent rules in the sake of entertainment like in the F1, it also brings into question neutral umpires again given the decision not to award the wide was with a NZ umpire in Gaffaney
A number 11 being the last man out? Surely if we haven't scored enough runs to win a game it is the batsman not the best bowler England have ever had who should shoulder blame, if any blame is merited? For all Jimmy has won endless test matches with the ball, he’s lost a fair few with the bat
For me, that 3rd morning we let NZ score way too many when persisting with Leach. Southee just piled into him. He never looked like getting a wicket.A number 11 being the last man out? The way Stokes and McCullum want to play is to force a result rather than a draw and so even against Australia I feel you will go into the Ashes with the same ethos. Good article over here in the Dominion Post - an interview with both. They want to entertain and see a draw as no better than a loss. So expect more aggressive declarations and risks. They don’t mind losing. For me, that 3rd morning we let NZ score way too many when persisting with Leach. Southee just piled into him. He never looked like getting a wicket.
That said, it’s easy looking back in hindsight. There are probably 100 things you could go back and want to change when the gap is so narrow across 5 days.
Just one of those Test Matches where you hold your hands up and applaud both teams for a fantastic Test Match and a brilliant Spectacle. We’ve had our share of fortune against NZ over recent times so can’t begrudge them the win.
Despite the result, a lot of it wouldn’t be possible without Englands attacking batting and forcing the follow on. If giving the opposition a sniff, results in similar Test matches in the future then so be it.
Apart from the the Summer v The Aussies of course. I want us to win at all costs.
Looking forward to that, and will get my ticket sorted for the Saturday at Welly again. What we NZ cricket enthusiasts appreciate is a team coming to NZ and being competitive. When India West Indies, Pakistan Sri Lanka (who come next week for a pretty dull series) never seem enthusiastic to play and we beat them. Annoyed there was only two tests in this series but buoyed by the fact that England come here again at the end of next year for a 3 test series
