2575 Mackems

I used to work up there and among the "insults" thrown at me/us were you're not in the North East, you're in Yorkshire. For some reason they thought we would be offended by this.As you said, thickos!
I've had this one before. Just tell them that unfortunately for you, you don't get to decide where the north east starts and stops.

Our fan base has always been more concentrated - its really the old County Cleveland takeaway Hartlepool area.

Tradationally - Sunderland is all of County Durham except Gateshead area.

Part of the reason is Sunderland was a well developed town before football was invented and before the Industrial Revolution. So there was established links over hundreds of years to link the town with the county. Contrast with Middelesbrough which was really established extremely quickly in about 20 years and was a heavy industry town surrounded by predominately rural areas - North Yorkshire - i.e. socially disconnected with its surroundings.

The new matches thing is some people have moved away (but can get to weekend games) or work away during the week, SKY red button, school, less away fans.

It's always because of politics that people complain about here.
100%. It's always that. Some can't handle that this place is staunch anti-Tory mainly and has lots who see the complete folly of Brexit.

Those are welcome to f*ck off to a mackem board.

I agree - I have come to the conclusion some posters just start politically related topics to purely rant and rave, spread anger, and disrespect and/or troll others. Its easy to get sucked in as some aspects of social media are like a drug. I possibly niavely try to see the best in others, while I realise now over 90% of posters have decided some posters are just a complete waste of time.

You talked about fans not being from Sunderland, I talked about many of ours (probably a majority) not being from Middlesbrough.

I know all about the pit villages in Durham, for most it's still their local club.
CC - I would say the majority of our fans come from what is deemed Teesside, while a lot of Sunderland are from outside Wearside places like Durham City, Consett, Spennymoor, Bishop Auckland, Jarrow, South Shields, Peterlee, Trimdon.

Middlesbrough is the local professional club for a lot of towns in North Yorkshire, but Leeds get more support from them. (Richmond, Northallerton, Whitby, Pickering, Helmsley)

No doubt there's a thread on the Mackem forum with hundreds of replies claiming they don't care! A Boro game might not compare with Newcastle (I understand that) but there's no doubt it's a local rivalry. Claiming anything otherwise is factually wrong.

Games like these show the difference between internet forums, Twitter and real life. Spending time online shows loads of idiots typing idiotic comments. In real life most Sunderland fans are decent. I work with loads and all are spot on. It's almost like we're the same type of people from the same part of the world!
Living in Darlo, I meet both Mackems and Geordies on a regular basis and we all get on fine.

I agree, it's still their local team if they're following EFL football.

We have plenty of fans in Darlington, Shildon, Spennymoor, Ferryhill and Sedgefield as well as Stokesley, Great Ayton, Loftus, Brotton, Saltburn, Whitby etc

Its this more than any other insult they can throw at us that staggers me the most.
I can count on the fingers of no hands the amount of Boro fans who are desperate to muscle in on the bilateral 'bantz' of the Geordie nation.

Christ, having a pop at Sunderland because they get support from places like Peterlee...where Sunderland are the closest club.

Referring to East Durham pit villages as if they are something to be ashamed of.

Guess what, most Boro and Sunderland fans will have more in common than it seems some on here would care to admit.

why do people type with an accent. bloody morons
We've mentioned this before on other threads. They are probably born nowhere near Sunderland so have to try extra hard to fit in with the thickets. Bit like that Hank Williams character, lives round here apparently but tries too hard to act all Mackem. Probably never been past Hartlepool. Funny enough, the decent posters on their forum don't do this. Work that one out.

In which post on this thread was that mentioned?

To be fair to that particular crank, he's mentioned previously that he originates from up there.
